Team Selection :
All change after Saturday's disappointing performance at Hednesford. Terry
Skiverton returned to the back 3 replacing Chris Sparks and Dean Chandler
joined him for his first 1st team appearance for a couple of months. Ex-Spurs
trainee Glen Poole made his first team debut at left wing-back and Paul Tisdale
made a rare start in the midfield. Matt Hayfield was pressed into action as an
emergency striker, both Adrian Foster and Jason Eaton being injured. Reserve team
striker James Bent made his first appearance on the bench, along with the returning
from injury David Norton and Steve Thompson.

First Half :
Wow! What a first half performance this was from Yeovil Town! Right from the
start the team dominated play, with Smith and Tisdale in particular spraying
the ball around to devastating effect, time and time again opening up the Hereford
defence, and linking well with the two front men.
The first chance fell to Matt Hayfield after good work from Patmore and Smith.
Running powerfully towards goal he was bundled over just outside the area before
he could shoot, a clear foul to everyone except our old friend witrh the whistle, Mr North. It
was David Piper's turn to impress next; receiving the ball wide on the right he
popped the ball over the head of the defender nearest him, ran around his man and crossed,
Patmore just failing to get on the end of it.
Yeovil were playing superbly by now, hitting first-time passes along the
floor and moving well off the ball. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute.
Warren Patmore - at last showing the kind of form we know he's capable of - broke
wide on the right. His perfect cross somehow slid past the the three Yeovil
players running into the area but found debutant Glen Poole wide on the
left of the box. From an acute angle POOLE made no mistake, placing the ball
into the corner of the net.
Matt Hayfield - looking as if he had played as a striker all his life - came
close with a powerful shot tipped wide by the shell-shocked Hereford keeper, but a
few minutes later Yeovil stretched their lead. A Glen Poole cross created havoc
in the Hereford box before the ball was eventually cleared to the feet of David Piper,
wide on the right. His perfect cross found PATMORE in space on the 6 yard line
- Wazza doesn't miss many from there, his header leaving the keeper with no chance. The big striker showed his delight with the goal
by carrying Piper over his shoulders all the way back to the Yeovil half!
Yeovil rounded off a tremendous first half by making it 3-0 before the break.
Matt Hayfield dribbled the ball into the Hereford area and released a defence-splitting
pass for PATMORE to run onto - all Wazza had to do was flick the ball over
the diving keeper, a feat he accomplished with ease. 3-0 to the Glovers at half-time, and
easily the best 45 minutes I've seen from the team this season - Hereford were
restricted to some long-range crosses and the odd corner which the defence
coped with easily.

Second Half :
Inevitably I suppose, the second half was something of an anti-climax. Yeovil
took their foot off the gas and
Hereford at last managed a few shots on goal, though Tony Pennock was never
troubled by any of them. The Yeovil defence was in outstanding form all
evening with Dean Chandler in particular marshalling them well - on this form
he must be in with a shout of returning to regular first-team action.
Glen Poole managed to get himself booked by Mr North, presumably
for a foul though it was hard to be certain. David Norton made a welcome
return from injury replacing the hard-working Rob Cousins, Jamie Pitman came
on for the very promising Glen Poole and the pacy James Bent replaced Patmore.
Norton had time to get himself booked for a foul before the end and the game
petered out in somewhat desultory fashion.

Web Site Verdict :
If only we could play like we did in the first 45 minutes in every game! The
first-time passing and movement of the team split the Hereford defence wide open
time after time. Everyone on the pitch in a green-and-white shirt ran, chased
and harried the Hereford team is if their lives depended on it - the attitude and e
effort in front of what was the lowest crowd I can remember at Huish Park for
a first team fixture, was first-class. One can only speculate as to what the
watching Glenn Hoddle and Steve McMahon made of it all. Indeed, in the absence
of any hard information one can only
wonder as to what they were doing there in the first place.... The word around Huish
Park tonight was that a decision on the vacant head coach's position has been taken
and will be announced tomorrow (Wednesday). If this was Steve Thompson's swan song
as head coach, then his team did him proud.

Thommo's Verdict :
Steve Thompson's Verdict on the game will hopefully follow on the site tomorrow.
