First Half :
The game kicked off in perfect conditions; bright, mild and with no wind
to spoil things. So much for the weather. If only referee Mr Jones had forgotten
his whistle then there might have been something more to report on as far as
first half action was concerned; sadly he seemed determined to turn the game
of football into a non-contact sport. The slightest of touches between players
was penalised, whether real or imaginery, and the game as a spectacle suffered
as a consequence.
In between the shrill sound of Mr Jones' whistle one or two chances were created.
For Yeovil Warren Patmore really should have scored from a
Jamie Pitman free kick, but he glanced his free header inches wide. Minutes later
the visitors could have taken the lead when Carl Henry's snap-shot was bravely
blocked by Tony Pennock. Witney came close again from a corner, but the ball
was scrambled away.
Ben Smith had possibly the best chance of the half when the ball fell into
his path inside the penalty area, but his well-struck shot was blocked on the
line. From the resultant break it was Witney's turn to come close with the
dangerous Henry spotting Pennock off his line - luckily for Yeovil his
inventive 40 yard lob just cleared the cross-bar. Just before half-time a
through ball from Smith found Piper in space wide on the right, but his
cross-cum-shot ran across the face of the goal and out of play. All in all
a pretty dismal 45 minutes with only one man stamping his personality on the
game. Unfortunately, that was the referee.

Second Half :
The second half began where the first left off, with Mr Jones penalising
everything in sight and Yeovil struggling to gain any kind of control.
Indeed, it was Witney who now began to look marginally the better team. Certainly
they were creating more chances than the home side now. A deep cross was tipped
over the bar by the straining Pennock and from the resultant corner Patmore
was there to head the ball clear with Pennock stuck in no-mans-land. Then Simon
Abercrombie shot over after a one-two with Carl Henry split open the Yeovil
defence.
The game was slipping away from the home team, so all credit to caretaker
coach Steve Thompson for having the courage to change things early enough.
Hayfield and Cousins replaced Smith and Stott, both of whom were looking tired.
It must be said that immediately there seemed to be greater bite in midfield,
and five minutes later Yeovil took the lead - albeit in bizarre circumstances.
Yeovil were awarded a throw-in next to the visitors corner flag. Jamie Pitman
hurled the ball into the penalty area, where it evaded everyone and bounced to
the visitors keeper. Incredibly the hapless Kevin ALDER somehow contrived
to make a total mess of gathering the bouncing ball, only managing to touch it
into the net. 1-0 to Yeovil, and you could cut the relief amongst the Huish Park
faithful with a knife.
The goal seemed to knock the wind out of Witney's sails and for the first time
in the match the home team began to impose themselves on the game. Alder partially
made amends for his error with a fine save from a close-range shot following a
Yeovil corner, but the Glovers turned the screw in the 78th minute. The
hard-working Adrian FOSTER received the ball in space deep in the Witney half,
cut inside and beat the diving Alder, stroking the ball into the net.
Witney tried to battle back, Jason Caffel forcing Pennock into a fine diving
save; but Tony Pounder nearly made it 3-0 after beating the offside trap, his
shot going wide. Steve Thompson replaced Adrian Foster just before the end, both
men receiving a warm reception from the crowd; but it was Witney who had the final
say when with the penultimate kick of the game Gary Murphy forced the ball into
the net following a long throw into the box - the truth be told, it was the
least their efforts deserved.

Web Site Verdict :
Relief all round at the end of the game. Witney were difficult opponents the
last time we played them in the Cup, and they were to prove so again today.
A combination of their doggedness, allied to no little skill, plus the baleful
influence of Mr Jones and his whistle; ensured that Yeovil had to work very hard
for this victory. It was a poor match and apart from in brief phases
Yeovil played poorly and with little fluency. Much work remains to be done on the
training-ground for the team to regain both confidence and style. Still, that's
being critical - on the plus side a trip to the Madjeski Stadium and Reading
awaits! The team should have no problems in motivating themselves for that game.

Thommo's Verdict :
It's great to get through to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. It's a marvellous feeling
and I'm a happy man to win that game. All credit to Witney - they gave us a very hard game today,
and the game really could have gone either way. We were quite poor for the first hour, did a
lot better for the last half hour, and managed to get the two goals when we were on top.
The first goal was an own goal by their keeper - I was just standing by Jamie as he threw
it because I was warming up. It was obviously distressing for the keeper, but we needed that
bit of luck and got it there. The second goal was a great finish by Adrian Foster. He was left
one-one-one, didn't have the greatest of angles, and just curled it with the outside of his right
foot into the bottom corner. It was a great finish and something that we know Adrian is well
capable of.
I'm delighted to win the game but I'm not delighted with the performance. We've got some players
here who have got a lot of heart and a lot of bottle, and we just need to start playing better
basically, and in our fluency of play.
Regarding the double substitution, I thought the midfield were looking very tired for us there,
probably because we had such a tough game at Kingstonian on Wednesday night, which is only just
over 48 hours away from the Saturday match. I made two changes to try and give us a little more
impetus and a little boost in midfield, and both Rob Cousins and Matt Hayfield came on and did
good jobs.
Reading is a big ground, a new ground, so I'm sure all the players will be looking forward to
going there to produce a good performance and hopefully get a result. I think it will be a good
experience for the lads and we do have a few players with Reading connections. It will be a
great day for the whole town of Yeovil and for Yeovil Town Football Club.
