Match Report

A fairly logical approach to team selection for manager Russell Slade for the long trip to Blackpool. Having seen his team put in a fairly stale looking performance against Cheltenham Town where they had struggled to create chances, he reverted back to the line-up employed for the successful afternoon at Brentford two weeks previously. That meant Arron Davies was immediately recalled to the starting line-up following his international spell with the full Welsh squad, whilst Wayne Gray dropped to the bench. Scott Guyett dropped out of the sixteen due to his midweek hamstring injury, but Lee Morris returned, whilst Danny Webb was preferred to Ishmael Welsh to give Russell Slade an extra option at both the front and at the back in case the main pairing of Terrell Forbes and Terry Skiverton didn't make it through the whole 90 minutes.

Blackpool started the game more brightly and two minutes into the match Steve Mildenhall was forced to palm the ball over his own bar for a corner after he was put under pressure in a swirling wind from a Shaun Barker corner. It was a messy start by the Glovers, with passes going astray and balls being knocked out of play as the visitors tried to get the ball under control in the elements.

However, five minutes in, Mark Lynch produced a hard waist high cross into the box and Arron Davies acrobatically hooked the ball across the face of goal, first time and the ball flashed across the face of goal. There wasn't too much happening at that end though - the home side were far more comfortable with the conditions and forced a succession of corners, but with the Yeovil defence and in particular Terry Skiverton looking in imposing form to stop the Blackpool attacks reaching fruition.

The Yeovil defence stood off Scott Vernon as he made a forward run 10 minutes into the match, allowing Blackpool's main marksman the chance to shoot from distance 25 yards in. A minute later, Skiverton was lucky to escape without a booking after he brought down Morrell close to the touchline. Next Steve Mildenhall had a near nightmarish moment when he kicked a clearance out of his hands in an attempt to keep play moving quickly, but in doing so, struck Andy Morrell on the back of the head - rebounding straight off the Blackpool striker and narrowly wide of goal - with Morrell knowing little of how close he had gone to giving Blackpool the lead.

Mark Lynch put a rare Yeovil chance over the bar, whilst at the other end, the impressive Wesley Hoolahan came with a shot out of nowhere from distance, with Mildenhall producing a superb save to push the ball over bar. A minute later Andy Morrell also cleared the bar as the home side continued to press. A flowing move by Blackpool on the half hour mark continued the pressure as, Shaun Barker skipped past the trio of Chris Cohen, Kevin Cooper and Paul Terry, laying the ball off at the right moment and the ball was ultimately returned to Keith Southern who slid in, letting down the end to end move right at the death, pushing the ball well wide of the target.

At this point Danny Coid was withdrawn for former Bristol City loan signing Marc Joseph after the full-back fell awkwardly sustaining a nasty looking knee injury. This was to have an effect upon the game but not before Yeovil had a very lucky let-off. With seven minutes to go before the break, Wesley Hoolahan got himself a penalty when he dragged the ball under foot of Mark Lynch slipped past him in style, and then tempted Jean-Paul Kalala into leaving his leg out for a clear penalty. Up stepped Scott Vernon, who promptly sent Mildenhall the wrong way ... but contrived to also roll the ball wide of the target, letting Kalala and Yeovil off the hook.

Yeovil were overall getting very exposed down their left flank, with Kevin Cooper not really involved in the game, and some pacey wing work down that flank seeing Nathan Jones looking very isolated at times in his efforts to shut Blackpool out. Wildly against the run of play, Paul Terry almost went for the spectacular after Marcus Stewart won a header in the penalty box and the ball dropped down to Terry with his back to goal. His overhead kick went narrowly wide of the target. But overall Yeovil were not doing enough to justify a lead in this half. Blackpool were faster to second balls, looked more dangerous going forward and had created the majority of the chances that fell during the first 45 minutes. No disaster though to be going in at the break with the scores level.

Half-time: Blackpool 0 - 0 Yeovil Town

The second half opened up with Yeovil operating in more positive fashion, looking to run at the Blackpool back line and in particular the flank occupied by substitute Marc Joseph, looking to expose the player in an unfamiliar position. Chris Cohen and Arron Davies produced excellent pressurising runs that unfortunately ended with no end product. In one occasion, Marcus Stewart opted to cross where perhaps he should have shot with his right foot, whilst on another occasion he appeared to be unbalanced as he put a left footed shot wide of the target.

Rather ironic then that Blackpool should take the lead during Yeovil's best spell. Scott Vernon netted after a corner had been put into the box, met by the head of Ian Evatt wide of the target, but to the feet of Andy Morrell who kept the ball in play, put the ball back into the danger zone and Scott VERNON was able to make up for his earlier penalty miss by slotting home from eight yards out.

Nathan Jones landed in the book for a pretty awful tackle on Keith Southern as Yeovil made their first substitution of the afternoon. Paul Terry appeared to be limping as he left the pitch to be replaced by Wayne Gray as Yeovil switched to a 4-4-2, thus in the process getting an extra man forward. Another dubious goal kick from Steve Mildenhall put Mark Lynch under unnecessary pressure from Blackpool winger Adrian Forbes. He grabbed possession from the Yeovil right-back and fed Vernon. Thankfully Mildenhall was able to immediately atone for his poor kick by saving the snap shot from Vernon.

Anthony Barry came on for JP Kalala just after referee Nigel Miller had committed howler of the day when a Vernon shot clearly deflected off Terrell Forbes, only for Miller to award a goal kick. No complaints here, but rather a lot from the home supporters! Yeovil had plenty of possession but were struggling to create openings. If anything Blackpool were the ones creating the openings with Hoolahan forcing Mildenhall into another strong save to keep Yeovil in the game. Russell Slade looked for more creative angles by taking off Kevin Cooper and bringing on Lee Morris. At the same time Andy Morrell was replaced by Keigan Parker in a one-for-one swap.

In the closing minutes, Chris Cohen produced a cross into the box seeing Wayne Gray and Jackson grabbling each other in the penalty box. Gray landed in a heap resulting in the travelling Yeovil support screaming for a penalty but referee Miller waved play on, probably undecided as to who fouled who in the first place. Gray's ripped shirt might suggest that he had the greater claim for the foul.

But two minutes later, and with just four minutes remaining, Yeovil struck gold. Nathan Jones fed Chris Cohen on the left hand side after both had been gifted plenty of space on that side. Cohen delivered a cross into the box and Marcus STEWART was there on hand to time his run and plant a six yard header past Rhys Evans and into the net for a valuable equaliser!

The game finished in tearaway fashion. Yeovil went on the attack for the winner, but were kept on the edge of their seats by the pace of Keigan Parker who was being used as the one-man breakaway route for Blackpool to pick long balls out for. As such it was difficult to know which way the game was going to go. In injury time Claus Bech Jorgensen shot in a crowded penalty box but Terrell Forbes got his body in the way, deflecting the ball inches over the crossbar. At the other end, Wesley Hoolahan was booked for cynically pulling back Lee Morris as he threatened to break away on the counter-attack, but the resultant free kick did not bring what Yeovil hoped for.

Three minutes of injury time added to the anxiety for a crowd on the edge of their seats, but no further goals were found and both sides had to settle for a share of the points. Not vintage Yeovil by any means, and perhaps they were a little fortunate that they were able to recompose themselves at half time with the scores still level. A better second half display though, and most importantly plenty of grit and determination on display - no more so than club captain Terry Skiverton, who was so exhausted on the full time whistle he collapsed on the field, having to be helped by club physio Jim Joyce and striker Marcus Stewart to get him back into the dressing room. Fortunately all is well with Skivo, and with the Glovers climbing up to third in the table, things are not too bad elsewhere either!

Full-time: Blackpool 1 - 1 Yeovil Town
