Team Selection :
Matt Hayfield failed to recover from his hamstring knock and so Ben Smith kept
his place in midfield. Terry Skiverton returned and put Kevan Brown back on
the bench whilst new signing Chris Sparks ousted an injured Dean Chandler.
Meanwhile significantly Adrian Foster was replaced by a fired up Jason Eaton
who seemed to be speaking through gritted teeth before the game such was his
determination to stake his claim for his place. New trial signing Stafford
Browne had to settle for a position on the bench.

First Half :
A first half devoid of many chances but full of clinical finishing and
woeful defending. There was little doubt as to who was guilty of what as Jason
Eaton stamped his intentions all over Colin Lippiatt's team selection as early
as the fourth minute when he received the ball on the edge of the area. The
whole of Park View Road seemed to be still in the pre-match bar (including the
players) as EATON received the ball just inside the edge of the area
and almost in slow motion slotted the ball into the net with keeper Andy
Harris seemingly rooted to the spot as the ball passed him.
Yeovil continued to show their early easy domination as Smith wasted a
glorious 6th minute chance by firing the ball over the bar but the let off for
Welling only lasted until the 18th minute. Mark Hone gifted the ball to
EATON once again and he made efficient use of his selection by getting
his second goal as he fired into the right hand corner.
Strangely despite the goals the first half was largely lacking of clear cut
chances. David Piper was not the only player staking his claim for a position
on the pitch and he showed his worth in the 37th minute when after a Pennock
block he stopped a ball on the line to keep Yeovil's clean sheet. During
injury time Welling had Rutherford booked for dissent but otherwise it seemed
plain sailing for Yeovil.

Second Half :
The second half proved to be an explosive encounter on the park as both
sides tried to assert some control on the game. Ritchie Hanlon put a free kick
over the bar whilst Danny Bailey got his name in the book for a rough
challenge on Ben Smith. But Yeovil were shocked into semi-submission when a half hesitant challenge from
Rob Cousins was seized on by Ritchie HANLON who slotted home to pull a
goal back.
No sooner had Welling given themselves hope than they fell asleep again. A
ball was lobbed into the centre of the field to Ben SMITH who showed
his class by chipping keeper Harris from 20 yards to give Yeovil
the 3-1 lead. But Welling weren't finished. HANLON, without whom Welling would
surely have been dead and buried deceived Terry Skiverton, cut inside him and
gave Welling a lifeline with a 65th minute clawback to produce a 2-3 scoreline.
Welling pushed hard at this stage and whilst Adams ballooned a shot over
the bar perhaps the turning point was when Chris Sparks appeared to man-handle
inside his own area. The referee waved play on and 60 seconds later Yeovil had a penalty. Warren
Patmore had the back of his shirt pulled by Harle and this time the referee
pointed to the spot, PATMORE shot straight down the middle and Yeovil
had a 4-2 lead.
The game seemed to fizzle out were it not for Jason Eaton looking for his
hat-trick. In the 82nd minute he had two chances when firstly Harris smothered
his shot then 60 seconds later a pass from Patmore produced an Eaton shot that
flashed passed Harris' left hand post.
With 6 minutes left Yeovil brought on Thompson for Norton, giving Thompson
his first game for 5 months, whilst Stafford Browne replaced Warren Patmore.
And it was Browne and Thompson who had the last laugh. Whilst Eaton seemed to
be the recipient of some off the ball argy-bargy Browne took the ball down the
Yeovil right wing and bundled the ball under pressure into the area where a
jubilant Steve THOMPSON slotted home from 10 yards to add a finishing
touch to a comfortable 5-2 win for Yeovil.

Web Site Verdict :
Bar the odd panic where Welling pulled what turned out to be consolation goals
back this was an extraordinarily comfortable victory albeit against a
horrifically weak Welling team, who bar Hanlon looked lower league fodder. The
advantage for Yeovil was how fired up Eaton looked prior to the match which
shone through in the first half. The cynical could say that Yeovil defeated an
awful side, but "good on them" for doing it and eventually doing it in style.

Colin's Verdict :
I think, like many other people, that on our day we can be a match for anyone. If we can show
the consistency that you need in football, then we've got a squad that matches up to anybody.
What disappointed me when I reflected back on Monday, the bottom line was that we didn't
create anything, yet yesterday with no disrespect to Welling, we scored five but I think that
anyone who watched the game would say that it could have been seven or eight. We've never
really had a problem scoring goals ever since I've been at Yeovil. Where our defficiency has
been is in conceding them. But if you take away that five goals at Scarborough, we have tightened
up well in the last six games, but on the negative side yesterday it was disappointing the
way we conceded the two goals we did.
The contribution of every player was good, it was a solid team performance, we looked up
for it from the word go, we got ourselves into a comfortable position, possibly too comfortable.
I felt that we let them back into the game rather than them getting back into the game, but
in saying that, anyone who goes to Welling or any other team in this league and gets five goals,
has got to consider it to be an excellent result.
