Team Selection :
Chris Sparks dropped out of the side when he was given leave to be Best Man
at a wedding and so Matt Stowell made his debut for Yeovil. Lee Archer made
his first start since his return to Huish Park displacing David Piper. This
allowed Jamie Pitman to move to his favoured right wing-back position.
|
First Half :
A low key poor quality first half with neither team imposing themselves
on the game. Telford were a big strong team and were cutting out most of
Yeovil's aerial passes with ease, but even though Telford controlled a lot of
the possession, they were unable to create chances to trouble Tony Pennock.
Telford's best chance of the half came when a Rob Cousins clearance was
charged down by Gez Murphy and the deflection screamed over the bar. Most of
Telford's possession came to nothing.
Conversely Yeovil's chances were just as few, with the best being a 40
yard lob from Ben Smith that went well wide plus an injury time free kick
that went straight into keeper Dean Williams' arms.
Yeovil did land the ball in the back of the net in the 28th minute but
Adrian Foster was well offside when he struck the ball and was booked for
placing the ball home after the whistle had blown. No score then, and
neither side deserved a goal.

Second Half :
The second half began in explosive fashion as both sides carved out two
quick goals. Chris Malkin looked a touch offside when he received the ball
in the centre of the park but his pass to Gez MURPHY saw the ball
crashed home from 15 yars with Pennock not standing a chance.
Within 90 seonds though Yeovil were level. A Lee Archer cross was faintly
flicked on by Warren Patmore and the ball was met by Jamie PITMAN who
equalised from an angled drive from 10 yards.
Just short of the hour mark, referee Mr Curson showedd consistency when
he booked Gez Murphy for shooting at goal after the whistle had blown in an
exact replica of the first half Foster booking.
Paul Tisdale made his debut on 64 minutes replacing a largely ineffective
Ben Smith but two minutes later Yeovil fell behind when a Gary Fitzpatrick
left wing cross was met by a free header from Brian McGORRY who had
all the room he wanted by the penalty spot to place his shot past a blameless
Tony Pennock.
With 12 minutes left Jason Eaton replaced Adrian Foster but shortly
afterwards disaster struck for Yeovil. They had been awarded a free kick
after Terry Skiverton had been elbowed in the face but Skiverton lost his
cool and in squaring up to his opposite number the referee felt there was
enough contact to justify a red card for Skiverton. Peculiarly the Telford
forward got off scot free.
To fill the gap, Kevan Brown replaced Lee Archer but it was all in vain.
With four minutes remaining insult was added to injury as Matt Hayfield
upended Simon Travis in the penalty area and Gez MURPHY got his
second goal of the game by sending Pennock the wrong way.
Yeovil had just enough time to create one more chance in injury time when
Steve Stott fired over after keeper Williams had committed himself after
punching the ball off Patmore's head. But in the end it was unlikely to ever
affect the result of the game.

Web Site Verdict :
Just plain awful. Whereas in the first half neither Yeovil or Telford did
anything to justify a goal, in the second half Yeovil seemed to mentally
fall apart, even before they had truly lost the game. The Skiverton sending
off was the final nail in the coffin but in all honesty the game was never
going to be Yeovil's from the moment Telford regained the lead. Where Yeovil
seemed to lose it was in badly "lumped" balls up forward. Whereas Yeovil
used to be a passing team, they seem to be playing as a panicked kick and
rush team which they just don't have the personnel to carry off. Some serious
work on Yeovil's passing needs to be carried out on the training field. More
performances like that and Yeovil can forget about any title challenge.

Colin's Verdict :
The basic bottom line, and I've told this to the players, is that we've lost our way, we've lost
direction, we've lost purpose and above all, both individually and collectively as a team, we've
been sucked into bad habits, we're being too nice and we're making all the wrong decisions.
If you look at a slope, a slope is hard to climb and to get to the top it is hard work to
get there. At the moment, we are on a slope that is sliding back the other way. Not a slippery
slope, but a slow slide. I'm concerned, and I'm not the sort of person to try and camoflague
or hide what I think or say. I think it's got to be "Back to Basics" for Yeovil Town.
I thought our second half performance was way below what was acceptable to me. But we shot
ourselves in the foot. We had the second half restart and gave the ball away, and Gez Murphy
scored. With the second goal, we ended up on our backsides outside the eighteen yard box, and
the ball went out wide, was crossed in, and on the penalty spot McGorry got a free header. You
can not afford to shoot yourself in the foot like that at this level of the game let alone
any other level. They are basic mistakes.
I don't know why it is, but we're still apprehensive. We don't seem to have the confidence
or the belief in ourselves of a side that is up near the top of the table. There are many
ingredients wrong. Colin Lippiatt must take the blame - not the players, I take total
responsibility for it. I asked them to respond today and I thought our attitude and commitment was
always good. I'm never going to fault our team spirit. But at the moment we lack direction and
we lack purpose, and at the moment we are not going to contend for anything. I have got to do
something about it. I've had an inner gut feeling for some time that although we've done OK,
we haven't ever played to our full potential, and we have definitely got to do something about it,
and get ourselves back on the right track.
