Team Selection :
Yeovil made one change from the team that beat Hereford in midweek,
Matt Hayfield returning from injury at the expense of David Norton who pulled
up in the warm-up with a recurrence of the calf strain that kept him out of the bulk of the
pre-season friendlies. Lee Archer made his return to Huish Park as
one of the replacements.

First Half :
It was another hot, sultry day for the players to cope with and the
conditions were undoubtedly a factor in what was a somewhat low-key opening
spell. Matt Hayfield was combining well with Ben Smith at times and put the
youngster clear in the visitors penalty box with a defence-splitting pass, only
for Smith to lose his footing at the crucial moment. Warren Patmore was winning
a great deal of ball in the air, but his flicks and chest-downs were being
swallowed up by the Morecambe defence.
The Shrimps looked as if they had come for the draw and weren't comitting
large numbers forward on their rare attacks. At the same time however Yeovil
seemed predictable on their forays forward and neither goalkeeper looked
in any trouble. Matt Hayfield did his best to liven up the game in the 20th
minute with a thunderous 30-yard drive from a free-kick but the ball was hit
straight at Andy Banks in the Morecambe goal. Ben Smith had a go from slightly
closer a few minutes later but again Banks was equal to it.
Warren Patmore should have been awarded a penalty just before half-time.
A cross looked to be heading straight for him but 2 Morecambe defenders climbed
all over him, pushing the Yeovil striker to the ground. The inconsistent Mr
Perkins was having none of it however and waved play on, to the consternation
of both Patmore and the Bartlett Stand supporters. Morecambe nearly added
insult to injury on the resultant break. Darren Lyons' shot being saved by
Pennock and the resultant rebound blasted over the bar.

Second Half :
The second-half began in the same inconclusive fashion as the majority
of the first-half was played, but Yeovil - through sheer persistence and
perspiration in place of inspiration - eventually broke the deadlock. A
Steve Stott freekick from wide on the left found Matt Hayfield on the edge
of the 6-yard box. He seemed to miss the ball altogether but the following-up
Chris Sparks managed to drag the ball back across the goal-line to the unmarked
Warren PATMORE who tapped into the empty net. 1-0 to Yeovil.
Adrian Foster replaced the tiring Jason Eaton in the 65th minute, but it was
the visitors who so nearly equalised a few minutes later. The hard-working Phil
Eastwood broke through on goal but - not for the first time this season - an
opposition forward was denied what appeared to be a simple goal by the out-rushing
Tony Pennock. If there's a better goalkeeper in the Conference in one-to-one
situations, then I haven't seen him.
Morecambe had by now abandoned all thought of playing for the draw and were
committing greater numbers to attack. Yeovil were being pegged back into their
own half and were looking under pressure, however they really should have added
a second in the 76th minute when a lovely sweeping move involving Patmore,
Smith and Foster resulted in Matt Hayfield's shot hitting the side-netting. It
wasn't to be long before they really did make the game safe though. A pacy passback
to Andy Banks in the Morecambe goal was mis-controlled by the keeper, the ball
squirting up in the air. Banks again mis-kicked the ball and PATMORE bustled
in to take control of the situation and knock the ball into the unguarded net.
Ben Smith came close to making it 3-0 shortly afterwards but his chip was
pushed around the post by Banks when it seemed the midfielder had scored. Morecambe
could easily have been awarded a penalty themselves in the closing minutes when
Matt Hayfield charged down a cross from inside the Yeovil box with his arms
raised, but again Mr Perkins waved play on. Patmore had time to glance the ball wide
from an unchallenged header when it looked odds-on that he would score and the
game gradually petered out in the hot sunshine with Morecambe continuing to press,
but never really looking likely to break down a strong Yeovil defence.

Web Site Verdict :
5 home games - 15 points, yet another clean sheet, and now joint top of the
league with Stevenage. What a turnaround
from last season! Today's victory was hard-won but ultimately deserved because
of Yeovil's greater incisiveness in front of goal. Morecambe had their fair
share of the ball but only rarely threatened Yeovil's goal and when they did
they found Tony Pennock continuing his impressive run of form. This Yeovil
side appears to have the knack of grinding out results without ever really
hitting top gear - when they do hit top form who knows what they might achieve?

Colin's Verdict :
Stats-wise you can't take away the fact that we've played five games, won all five and
haven't conceded a goal. I think that alone is a a good tribute to the players already
this season. I'm obviously naturally pleased, but we're not gloating, we're not shouting our
mouths off because there is a long way to go. Over the 90 minutes I think they had a couple
of good chances, but we could have built on our two, because Warren could have had a hat-trick
with his free header. I said to the players
at half time that they had to get their concentration levels right, and be disciplined and be
patient. I just felt that if we were patient we could get in there. But it was without any
shadow of a doubt a tight game and they are a decent side. I think it was an improvement on the
previous four home games, it was the most solid professional performance so far. I still believe
and the players still believe that we still have a little bit left in the locker. But nobody
can deny the committment and workrate of this side, and that accounts for a lot of the
foundation of why we've kept those clean sheets.
