Match Report

No changes once again for Russell Slade's side as three players - Paul Terry, Ishmael Welsh and Lee Morris - all came through late fitness tests that allowed him the ability to select the same sixteen players as he did against Nottingham Forest. This was Yeovil's third trip to Sixfields - but their first for two years - and the Glovers went there looking to break a sequence that has seen them fail to beat Northampton since Yeovil entered the Football League.

Early chances saw Northampton's Jerome Watt send one shot whistling past Steve Mildenhall's post, whilst a Nathan Jones free kick caused Northampton danger with their keeper having to make a strong save from Wayne Gray as he looked to get on the end of the set-piece. All was a little on the frantic side from both teams with all 22 players closing down passes and trying to pressurising each other into making mistakes. But at both ends the defences were well on top in the main.

Terry Skiverton lifted a header over the bar at the far post from a Chris Cohen corner that was forced by strong forward play by Mark Lynch, who had forced his way up field. Midway through the first half the Glovers seemed to be gradually on the ascendancy, but they were knocked back by Northampton's first real chance on goal. A multi-man move from Northampton saw a dangerous ball put into the box with Yeovil unable to regain possession. A second cross into the box from the right was met by a header from close range. Steve Mildenhall made a great close range save, but couldn't hold onto the ball and Jason CROWE was able to pounce on the loose ball and force it home from close range.

Pedj Bojic sent a powerful long range effort over the bar as Northampton pressed with their tails firmly up. Yeovil were continuing to pass the ball around well, but bar the two early chances were struggling to create any clear-cut attempts on goal - getting around the edge of the Cobblers penalty box but struggling to make the Cobblers keeper work. Finally when they did, their half was somewhat summed up when referee Mr Bates blew for half time just as Yeovil were preparing to tee up a corner.

The goal excepted, this was not a bad half for the Glovers, but the lack of clearcut chances was a concern as without those, clearly there was not going to be a way back into the match. Northampton hadn't had many attempts on goal either, but they had the one that mattered with Crowe's close range conversion.

Half-time: Northampton Town 1 - 0 Yeovil Town

Northampton made their second substitution at half time with Ryan Gilligan replacing Jerome Watt who had received treatment late on during the first half. Pedj Bojic was constantly involved in Northampton's moves throughout the game, and he provided one cross that Steve Mildenhall had to keep a close eye on to claim above a Northampton attacker. Another Bojic cross found Andy Kirk but his header was weak and straight into Mildenhall's arms.

Yeovil finally got going 10 minutes into the half, although Terry Skiverton's attempt that set things off was somewhat wayward to say the least. But Lee Morris showed far more danger by having a run at the Northampton backline, causing Chris Doig to panic a clearance off the legs of a team-mate and off for a corner. Unfortunately the set piece came to nothing of consequence. Shortly after Lee Morris made way for Ishmael Welsh as Russell Slade made his first substitution in a like-for-like swap.

That tactical change took just six minutes to reap it's rewards with Welsh firmly involved with a great end to end move that started with Steve Mildenhall. The ball was fed through to Jean-Paul Kalala who picked the ball up in midfield and he in turn fed Ishmael Welsh out onto the left. Nathan Jones picked up the substitute's pass, and with the momentum firmly with the Glovers, the ball was delivered in and there was Marcus STEWART to deliver a header into the back of the net for his second goal since arriving on loan. 1-1 and matters back on track!

Big target man Daniel Webb replaced Wayne Gray for the Glovers whilst big target man James Quinn came on as a final substitute for the home side, replacing Andy Kirk. Perhaps a statement of intent by both managers for the final quarter hour?

The two changes seemed to serve the Glovers better with the visitors going on to have their most productive spell of the game following the goal. Daniel Webb came within inches of getting on the end of a cross, whilst he did connect with another ball into the box, only for the ball to go over the bar. Paul Terry also managed a golden opportunity when he turned and shot in the box only to find home keeper Mark Bunn in the right position at the right time, to make an excellent block. But Northampton could have even won it themselves right at the death when a misdirected cross deceived keeper Steve Mildenhall, with the custodian having to suddenly react to a ball that had veered into an on target 'shot', forcing him to push the ball around for a corner.

A point at a ground where the Glovers have never won is no disgrace, and it keeps the tally ticking over consistently. Possibly the only complaint is that at the moment the Glovers are getting a lot of possession and territory without clearcut chances being generated. Once they work out how to resolve that matter, then draws like tonight's game would surely turn into wins.
