Team Selection :
Colin Lippiatt was able to field an unchanged team for the 4th successive match -
surely something of a record at Yeovil! Transfer-listed Phil Simpson was dropped
from the bench, reservist Andy Lindegaard taking his place, otherwise it was
as you were.

First Half :
It was too warm for football today really, but both team's served up an
entertaining game for the basking crowd. Yeovil had slightly the better of the opening
exchanges with Warren Patmore coming close after a lovely turn with the ball
with his back to the goal, but his well-struck shot flew wide.

Warren Patmore lays the ball off for Matt Hayfield who nets the opening goal
|
Kettering's big, bustling striker Sam Banya found himself through on goal
with only Tony Pennock to beat a few minutes later, but the Yeovil keeper
produced a superb reflex save to keep the scores level. From his clearance
Warren Patmore found himself in space deep in the Poppies half. His inch-perfect
pass rolled perfectely into the path of the onrushing Matt HAYFIELD who
made no mistake with his shot, slotting home off the far post past the
despairing Adam Sollit in the Kettering goal.
The visitors began to pick up the pace of their game and to be fair had most
of the play for the rest of the half, creating some good chances. Yeovil looked
content to defend deep and play on the break. A combination of poor finishing and
some excellent goal-keeping from Tony Pennock frustrated the Poppies and their
small following, and Yeovil turned the screw in the 28th minute by adding a 2nd
goal to their lead.
The goal was as simple as it was effective. The excellent Jamie Pitman broke
quickly down the right into Kettering's half, Warren Patmore waiting in the box.
The incoming cross found PATMORE'S head who left Sollit with no chance.
2-0 to Yeovil, albeit slightly against the run of play. Two minutes later Dave
Norton, who had another outstanding game, really should have made the game safe
after being put through one-on-one with Sollit in the Kettering goal by the
tireless Steve Stott, but his shot screwed agonisingly wide. Kettering
continued to press for the remainder of the half and were unlucky when a Pennock
save rebounded from the post and ran along the line before being cleared.

Second Half :
The visitors picked up where they had left off immediately after the break and
came at Yeovil with all guns blazing. Their best chance again fell to the big
number 9, Banya, but with only the keeper to beat his shot went well wide. Yeovil
nearly made Kettering pay after some excellent work on the right by Dave Norton.
His inviting cross was headed powerfully towards goal by the
ubiquitous Patmore, but Adam Sollit stopped what seemed a certain score with a
quite superb two-handed diving catch in the top left hand corner. Wonderful play
all round!
Matt Hayfield had clearly been struggling with an injury for a while and he
was replaced by Ben Smith in the 61st minute. Smith now began to dominate the
game against the tiring Kettering side and was the catalyst behind some excellent
moves by the home side. By now Yeovil were in complete control and it was their
turn to be somewhat profligate with their finishing, with Jason Eaton, Steve Stott
and the hard-working Adrian Foster all spurning reasonable opportunities to increase
the lead. The Poppies caused a final scare in the Yeovil penalty box in the last
minute with Tony Pennock entirely missing a cross, but - as often happened this
afternoon - the header that followed flew wide.

Web Site Verdict :
Overall, a reasonable performance. We took our goals extremely well and in the
final 30 minutes in particular played some outstanding football. However if
Kettering's finishing had matched some of their approach play in the first half
then the result could have been somewhat different. As it was we were ultimately
good value for the win, but perhaps somewhat fortunate not to concede at least one
goal.

Colin's Verdict :
I still think we've got a lot to offer in our locker as I said last week. Having taken a stuffing
on the first day, I think it's encouraging that we've played three games at home, got nine points
and kept three clean sheets. That's encouraging because I know we're not playing to the potential
or fluency that I would like to see. But for all those little criticisms, our attitude and
commitment was good, our workrate was good, we scored two excellent goals, but I'll be honest,
the game could have finished 3-3 or 4-4. I'm not getting carried away with it, I've told the players
we can't be complacent with that because we've got to do better than what I saw today, but
in saying those criticisms and being slightly negative it's
encouraging to know that we can do better.
