Yeovil Town defeated Weymouth 5-1 at The Wessex Stadium tonight in front
of 'The Terras' largest home gate of the season - 1,248 - in David Laws'
testimonial game. Yeovil opened the scoring as early as the third
minute
when Nick CRITTENDEN found the corner of the net with a low drive, and
from
then on the visitors created numerous chances at regular intervals as
they
threatened to run up a cricket score.
Kirk Jackson went close on two occasions with headers that dropped the
wrong
side of the post, however Yeovil scored their second goal when a sublime
chip from Michael McINDOE in the 36th minute found the corner of the net
- a
most bizarre goal indeed as most of the spectators present did not
actually
realise the ball had entered the net until Weymouth took the centre -
the
ball rebounding out of the goal via a stanchion as a cloud of smoke from
a
nearby fire engulfed one half of the stadium! The next time the ball
struck
a post Lee JOHNSON was on hand to score from two yards in the 38th
minute to
make the score 3-0.
Half-Time: Weymouth 0 Yeovil Town 3
After the break Yeovil came at Weymouth straight from the kick off and
Steve THOMPSON made the score 4-0 in the 48th minute after 'Terras' goalkeeper
Paul Myers had done well to parry the initial shot, Thompson hammering
home
the rebound from eight yards which Myers could only push into the net.
David LAWS gave the home supporters something to cheer midway
through the second half as he scored a consolation goal, however Yeovil continued to create chance after
chance with Jackson somehow failing to get onto the scoresheet when well
placed in front of goal, striking an upright and then blazing over when
it
looked easier to score.
Adam STANSFIELD's appearance in the second half
bought a rousing reception from the 300 Yeovil fans present, and it was
the
pacy frontman who rounded the scoring off in the 89th minute when he
pushed
the ball around Myers before netting from an acute angle infront of his
adoring supporters. Weymouth paraded Steve Claridge and Guy Whitingham
in
their line up with Chris Lane, formerly at Southport, enjoying a
productive
game for the visitors.
