Yeovil Town saw off Gary Johnson's Bristol City side by a 2-1 scoreline this afternoon at Huish Park after a stormy encounter saw three late goals bring a tight game to life.
A goalless but frantic and fractious first half saw plenty of niggles and an early blow for the Glovers when Terry Skiverton have to come off with an achilles injury with goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall taking over the captain's armband, and Scott Guyett coming into the field of play. Guyett's involvement in the match only lasted half an hour - right on half time he was involved in a skirmish with City captain Louis Carey who elbowed the Aussie in the penalty box whilst Yeovil were preparing to take a free kick. Both players were dismissed by referee Andre Marriner and it was probably just as well that both managers were able to keep their players in the dressing room for 15 minutes straight after the incident.
With the Glovers without Skiverton and Guyett, manager Russell Slade introduced Anthony Tonkin as a second half makeshift centre-back but it was the introduction of Arron Davies 15 minutes from time that was to turn the game. His first significant touch was to deal with some sloppy play from City striker Barry Corr and to take the ball on and hammer home a 25 yard strike to put Yeovil 1-0 up.
The Glovers effectively sealed the game in the 90th minute when Wayne Gray intercepted a poor pass between full-backs Jamie McAllister and Richard Keogh, beat the last man with power and pace, and slotted past keeper Adriano Basso.
Former Glover Lee Johnson had a quiet game overall, but he did enough to win a penalty deep into four minutes of injury time when Anthony Tonkin fouled him inside the box. Phil Jevons did what he had done during two previous seasons at Huish Park by scoring from the spot, but that wasn't enough to justify a late comeback for City in front of Huish Park's biggest crowd of the season of 9,009.
Yeovil move up to second in the table after Scunthorpe United could only draw, although they've got a long way to go before they can see the top of the table - leaders Nottingham Forest won again to put them seven points clear of the Glovers.
