31 July 2006 : Late Late Clarke Goal Seals Final Friendly Win
A 92nd minute goal from Tom Clarke gave Yeovil Town a 1-0 win in their final pre-season friendly against Tiverton Town at Ladysmead tonight. The Glovers dropped the majority of their first team squad for the game, selecting instead a mixture of fringe and youth players. There was one new face in the side - Danny Brook who played in midfield. Brook was a former YTS at Exeter City.

The team selection saw Daniel Webb captain the side and take up an unusual centre-back position, whilst trialist Lee Morris got his first start in a Yeovil shirt.

The game was played in driving rain, and although the pitch at Ladysmead held up well, this was not a game with many shots on goal. Tiverton came the closest during the first half - striking the woodwork twice. Yeovil's best chances tended to come from the wings, with Ishmael Welsh and Gavin McCallum getting into good positions. Welsh managed to create Yeovil's best chance of the half - a good ball into the centre that found Lee Morris, but the striker dragged his shot wide.

Morris managed to last 70 minutes on the night - the longest he has managed so far and a suggestion that he is starting to win his fitness battle, having spent most of pre-season on the treatment table. He was replaced by youth teamer Phil Ormrod. Two minutes later, there was a welcome return for goalkeeper Danny Barker, who last season broke both of his wrists, prompting concerns that his promising career as an England Schoolboys keeper could be in danger. Danny took over from Darren Behcet between the sticks, thus giving him a welcome boost in his efforts to secure a comeback.

The game looked as though it was destined for stalemate, with the weather dominating proceedings and the young Yeovil team holding on at times against their more physical and experienced opponents. But on 92 minutes with almost the last kick of the game, Tom Clarke shot on the edge of the box, from a slight angle, and the final pre-season friendly was won.

Line-Up: (4-4-2) Darren Behcet; Jake Smeeton, Gary Bowles, Daniel Webb, Craig Alcock; Ishmael Welsh, Stephen Maher, Danny Brook, Gavin McCallum; Tom Clarke, Lee Morris. Subs: Phil Ormrod (70 mins for Lee Morris), Danny Barker (72 mins for Darren Behcet), Matt Concliffe (for Stephen Maher), Oliver Wake (for Danny Brook).

Attendance: 518.
