Yeovil Town Under-18s battled their way through to the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup tonight, as Surrey side Merstham were knocked out by a 2-0 scoreline. In truth, the young Glovers had to do a lot of defending to keep themselves in the competition despite taking the lead as early as the 11th minute, when Callum Morton latched onto a long clearance down the middle, with the striker slotting the ball home for an early lead.
For much of the match, it was goalkeeper Kingsley Latham who was one of the busiest players on the park, as he pulled off a string of saves during the match to keep his side in the competition. Yeovil did manage to weather the storm to a degree when they changed formations from a 4-4-2 to a 4-5-1 early in the second half, packing men behind the ball, and they delivered the sucker punch in the 90th minute, as Merstham lost possession from their own throw-in, and substitute Jack Hilton-Jones capitalised to put the Glovers though to the next round.
They will now travel to play West Bromwich Albion in the Third Round of the competition, testing themselves against an EPPP Category One side. That tie will be played next month, with all Third Round ties due to be completed by Saturday 17th December.
