Officials for Yeovil Town's lengthy trip to play Hartlepool United have been announced. The match takes place on Saturday 9th April 2011 at Victoria Park, with a 3.00p.m. kick-off. The man in charge will be Paul Tierney (Lancashire).
We've only had Mr Tierney once as a match referee, but it's a game in which the 341 travelling fans who were present at the game will vividly remember him for. The December 2009 fixture against Milton Keynes Dons saw Mr Tierney bottle a sending off when Dons defender David McCracken took out Glovers striker Dean Bowditch whilst he was clean through on goal. It was difficult to see how it could be anything other than a professional foul - somehow Mr Tierney disagreed, and the Glovers ultimately let their 2-0 advantage slip, gaining only a 2-2 draw in a match where they should have been playing three-quarters of the match with 10 men.
In the post-match interviews, even Dons manager Paul Ince admitted he had expected a red card, whilst Glovers boss Terry Skiverton was rather more forthright saying in his post-match interview, "we are being let down by people not brave enough to make decisions" and suggesting that such refereeing decisions were making his club a laughing stock in the Football League.
Both before and after that, we've not had Mr Tierney as the man in the middle. Our paths crossed when he was an assistant for the April 2006 away game at Huddersfield Town that kept us in League One, whilst he was the Fourth Official for the 5-0 defeat at Stockport County in the FA Cup during November 2008. And that's basically yer lot. Part of the reason is that he was only promoted to the Football League's referees list during the summer of 2009 - the other reason will be his Lancashire address.
Mr Tierney has taken charge of two Hartlepool United games already this season - their 4-0 defeat at the hands of Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park in February saw him raise four yellow cards, whilst last September saw him take charge of their home match against Carlisle United. The end result - another four yellows and another 4-0 defeat. Any chance of three in a row?
Mr Tierney will be assisted by Mike George (Norfolk) and Ricky Wootton (West Riding). The Fourth Official will be Simon Clayton (County Durham).
