Officials for Saturday's trip to Spotland for the match against Rochdale on Saturday October 9th have now been published. The man in charge will be referee Andy Haines (Tyne and Wear). We're not sure if referees can bring clubs good luck or bad luck, or if results in matches involving referees can be any guide to the future, but if there is such a thing as an 'unlucky referee' then Andy Haines is it, given that we've lost the last two matches he's refereed involving Yeovil Town by a 4-0 scoreline!
To be fair to him, the fact that the opponents on both occasions were Leeds United may have had more to do with it. Manager Terry Skiverton had a few minor quibbles about some of Mr Haines' decision-making early on in the October 2009 game, although his biggest decision came after the match when Leeds striker Tresol Kandol was given a retrospective red card for attacking Sam Williams after the final whistle. Not much you can do as a referee when players decide to do that.
In the March 2009 meeting, also at Elland Road, Mr Haines didn't have too much of a bad game, and certainly didn't affect the final result, but Glovers boss Terry Skiverton wasn't totally happy with Mr Haines' performance, citing his side's two bookings as part of his post-match views on the official.
Aside from the two Elland Road matches, we've had Mr Haines for a pre-season friendly against Plymouth Argyle and a number of occasions as an assistant referee. His one other time in the middle came in January 2008 for a 2-2 draw at Port Vale. We had no major complaints about him on the night.
Mr Haines will be assisted by Martin Coy (Durham) and Anthony Tankard (South Yorkshire). The Fourth Official will be Jason Whiteley (West Yorkshire).
