Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC Just Before Kick-Off Against Preston

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Somerset reporter Brendon Mitchell just before kick-off against Preston North End on Saturday 28th January 2012. Yeovil went on to win 2-1.

BM: Okay, what team news can you give us ahead of this one?

GJ: We were unlucky in that Kelly Youga has got a bit of a problem with his Achilles. He was unlucky in training during the week, so we're not going to be able to play him. But actually Gavin Williams has been very good this week, so we're very pleased with his week. It gives us another footballer. It might mean that we've just got to put Ryan Dickson back to left-back.

It doesn't give us a left-footed player on the left, but what it does give us is a clever little player on the left-hand side. With Preston playing three in the middle generally - and we'll have to see whether they do that - but it might suit us quite well in that Gavin can play into there.

BM: Yes, he can play all the way across that midfield, can't he? I guess he'll come in off a narrower option in there.

GJ: Yes he will. They all know their role. Everybody knows their responsibilities. As I keep saying, it's not subbuteo men. People have got to move around. It's going to be all different shapes. We've got to try to get into them. It's a new manager for the players at Preston. They've got to learn how the manager wants them to play. So it could be a good time to play them.

At the same time, there's some good players in their team, and of course they're going to try to wind their team up, because we've had lots of history between Yeovil Town and Graham Westley. He's done well to get where he's got, but we've got to do what we did last time and firstly make sure we come away with a result if we can, but also we've got to show great spirit and attitude to make sure that we give ourselves a chance to win the game.

BM: Preston are a big club at this level, and one to look forward to for the fans, I think.

GJ: Yes, it's a big game of course. It's definitely going to be one for the fans to look forward to. They'll only really enjoy it if we win. That's what I tell them, and that's true. But at the same time, we've got to make sure that a difference. There are some good players in our squad, but they've got to come out of their shells now. Now is the time to kick on and show us that they are ready to compete at this level.

BM: There was a real fanfare of excitement about the last home game. It's business as usual today and it's all about those three points, isn't it?

GJ: It is, yes. I was a bit disappointed because someone said that the honeymoon was over at Bury, and I thought that's a bit early, isn't it? We all have a longer honeymoon than that, surely? I think it was you! (referring to Western Gazette reporter Chris Sweet) (laughs) But anyway, whoever it was, we've had to turn it around. You don't suddenly go from bottom of the league to top of the league. But we've got to get some good players, and we've got to get the players that are here competing better and playing better. They've all got the ability, but you've got to bring it out, and that's what we've got to do, to make sure they give us every chance to pick up three points.
