Name: Gary Warren
Position: Central Defender
Date of Birth: 16 August 1984
Place of Birth: Bristol
Gary was signed by Yeovil Town on June 28th 2018, shortly after agreeing to terminate his contract at Inverness Caledonian Thistle by mutual consent. He became the club's fourth signing of the summer of 2018.
Despite being recruited from Scotland, Warren is very much a West Country boy who has spent most of his career in the South West. Born in Bristol on August 16th 1984, he started his career with Mangotsfield United who he played for between 2002 and 2006, making 164 appearances, scoring 11 goals. In the summer of 2006 he joined Team Bath, and was part of their club's rise into the Conference league structure, spending three years there, making 111 appearances and scoring eight goals.
Warren then moved to Conference South side Newport County, where he was part of their 2009-10 title winning side, as well as being named Conference South player of the season. He went on to play in an FA Trophy Final for Newport - by then as part of a side that included future Glover Sam Foley. He made 120 appearances, scoring 11 goals.
In the summer of 2012, he moved to Scotland to sign for an Inverness side managed by Terry Butcher. He was part of a squad that reached the 2013-14 Scottish League Cup Final and 2014-15 Scottish Cup Final, but was unfortunate enough to pick up suspensions just before the two finals that meant that he did not play in either fixture. By now Warren was their Club Captain, and in 2017-18, he was part of a side that won the Scottish Challenge Cup against Dumbarton, and thus was able to lift the trophy on behalf of the club.
Overall, he made 214 appearances for Inverness, scoring 19 goals for the club across six years. Warren has been allowed to leave Inverness due to them needing to cut back on their finances, following their relegation into the Championship. Just before his release, Inverness manager John Robertson explained the rationale for allowing him to look for another club:
"I spoke to Gary a few weeks back and discussed the club's budget situation. With the cuts we are facing again, I explained the best solution for the club would be to move Gary on as he is on a Premiership wage and appearance fee. But I also made it clear I recognised he was under no obligation to go anywhere unless the move benefitted him and his family. I've said, if he stays, the club would have to honour his deal. This has nothing to do with Gary's ability, commitment or leadership as all are excellent. He will remain captain as long as he is here. It is simply down to finances and dealing with players on a Premiership wage while we are in the Championship and don't have the same income from generated from prize money and gate receipts."
Gary has been given a two year contract at Huish Park that will keep him on the club's books until June 2020.
