Sam can play in various attacking midfield positions along with striker roles. The Irishman is a former Cheltenham Town trainee, who played for their Reserve Team up until the end of the 2007-08 season, as well as going out on loan to play for Bath City. Sam captained Cheltenham's Youth Team, but did not get as far as making a first team appearance for the Robins.
He then signed for Kidderminster Harriers, and was on their books for the 2008-09 season, spending some time out on loan with Redditch United. He signed for Newport County, initially on loan, in February 2009, where he scored four goals, going on to make that move permanent for the 2009-10 season, playing for them in both midfield and front line positions.
During his first full season with the Exiles, at Conference South level, he netted 17 goals in 36 matches as Newport won promotion up to National level. At the higher level, he netted five times in 44 games during 2010-11, following that up with 12 goals in 49 appearances during the following season, taking his overall goal tally to 38 across the four years, having made just under 150 appearances. He also has represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-18 level.
Sam left Newport at the end of the 2011-12 season, signing a one year contract with Yeovil Town for the 2012-13 season. At the end of a highly successful first season with the club that saw him make 51 appearances as part of the club's League One promotion-winning squad, he was given a new two year contract that keeps him at the club until June 2015. Sam made his 100th appearance for the club on March 28th 2015, in the away match against Rochdale.
