Yeovil Town picked up a point, but lost their penalty shoot-out against Exeter City on Tuesday night, in their opening EFL Trophy Group Stage match at Huish Park. In a match that finished 0-0 in normal time, the Glovers had their best chance in open play when a second half trio of chances saw Jordan Green and Omari Patrick spurn efforts on goal. When it came to the spot kicks, although Chiedozie Ogbene fired well wide to put Yeovil in charge, the Glovers failed to convert consecutive penalties from Alex Pattison and Omari Patrick, allowing Grecians Academy player Jack Sparkes the chance to give his side a bonus point and put them on top of their group after one game.
The Glovers went into the match making four changes to their starting line-up for the game. Sessi D'Almeida was on international duty, whilst Alex Pattison was sat on the bench, allowing Jake Gray and Alefe Santos a chance to pair up in midfield. Up front, Alex Fisher and Diallang Jaiyesimi dropped to the bench, with Omari Patrick and Olufela Olomola replacing them, although Patrick started the game on the wing, with Yoann Arquin going up front.
In what was a rather quiet first half, the visitors created the better of the opportunities, even if it was Olufela Olomola's burst through as he chested the ball down, that brought off the game's first save, with his drive being parried away by James Hamon. Exeter were pressing the midfield well, and they saw a Jayden Stockley free kick deflect off the Yeovil defensive wall and over the bar, before a flowing move by Hiram Boateng saw him set up Lee Martin, only to find Nathan Baxter in the way.
Exeter got the ball in the back of the net five minutes before the break through Jayden Stockley, although he was flagged offside from Hiram Boateng's pass almost immediately, meaning that even the Exeter striker probably knew it wouldn't have counted. It was a half of very few efforts on goal, with the tempo of the match far lower than previous league games, and Yeovil's midfield struggling to get dominance of the ball. A few reshuffles saw Jordan Green finish the half up front, with Yoann Arquin moving back to the wing, but it still didn't spark anything of note.
The second period saw a more end to end brighter affair as the game began to open up. The Glovers had a wonderful opportunity early on in this period, with Jordan Green getting behind the Exeter back line, only to find James Hamon blocking his shot. As the goalmouth turned into diving bodies, Green saw a second effort blocked, before Omari Patrick and Olufela Olomola got in each other's way, with Patrick's weak shot easily saved by the recovering Hamon.
Alefe Santos gave away possession in midfield, allowing Exeter to break through Lee Martin, who in turn set up Jayden Stockley, with the striker's shot going across the face of goal. That was to be the end of Santos, as he was replaced a minute later by Alex Pattison. That allowed Yeovil to up their game far more in the centre, with Omari Patrick having a teed up shot blocked well by James Oakes for a corner.
With the game now firmly opening up, Jordan Tillson's shot saw Nathan Baxter parry the ball around the post for a corner, with Tillson putting over the crossbar from the resultant set piece, as he rose highest for the header, but misdirected it. But the longer the half went on, the more it fizzled out, with Alex Pattison having one 30 yard effort going over the bar, whilst another attempt went well wide. Yeovil did force a succession of three late corners, but Exeter by then were getting bodies in the way, meaning the game went to a shoot-out.
The first five spot kicks were all well delivered, meaning that when Exeter's Chiedozie Ogbene shot well wide of the goal, the Glovers should have been in a commanding position at 3-2 up, and a goal advantage. But Alex Pattison saw his spot kick saved, meaning that when Omari Patrick blasted his penalty well over the crossbar, it was the Grecians that had the advantage. Up stepped Exeter City's 17 year old Jack Sparkes - who had already netted against Yeovil Town as a 16 year old in last season's competition, and he scored the winning penalty to give Exeter a 4-3 victory from the shoot-out, and the extra bonus point.
