Yeovil Town's unbeaten League Two run came to an end this afternoon, as a tale of missed chances allowed Barnet to gain a classic smash'n'grab 0-1 victory. The crucial goal came six minutes from time, as Alex Nicholls came on as a substitute to grab the winner. That was the only recorded on target shot from the Bees, whilst at the other end, the Glovers failed to convert their chances - a Tom Eaves header struck the crossbar, whilst Otis Khan found a volley come off the underside of the same goalframe, but in the end it was Barnet who got all three points to allow them to climb above Yeovil, in a manner they'll feel was rather fortunate.
The Glovers went into the match making four changes to their starting line-up, but effectively all were to revert back to their previous League Two line-up after the midweek EFL Trophy match. Thus Artur Krysiak, Alex Lawless, Tom Eaves and Otis Khan all came back into the side, with the outgoing for all heading to the bench. Barnet's side began a new era with Martin Allen leaving the club for Eastleigh, leaving them in interim management for the immediate future.
The first half was a rather scrappy one with both sides struggling to carve out obvious chances. The fourth minute opportunity that came to Ryan Hedges perhaps didn't give a clue as to what was going to follow during the 41 minutes that followed. His weaving run that saw his final shot tipped over the bar by Jamie Stephens was straight out of the sort of football seen against Crawley Town last weekend, but unfortunately the rest of the half didn't really pan out that way.
Barnet adopted a battling physical approach in midfield - sometimes too physical as John Akinde bashed Ryan Hedges off the field of play, leading to him getting a booking. Most of the time though Barnet stayed on the right side of the law, albeit without really bothering Artur Krysiak's afternoon. Luke Gambin's shot was too high, whilst Curtis Weston found his effort blocked by the body of a Yeovil defender. At the other end, all the Glovers could muster was a Ryan Dickson effort that went comfortably wide, as the half ended deservedly goalless.
Yeovil took a while to warm up during the second half, but grabbed two clearcut chances in in one minute that could have broken the deadlock. A Ryan Dickson cross fell perfectly to Tom Eaves, but his header crashed off the crossbar, with the loose ball being saved by Jamie Stephens. Then in the next move, Ben Whitfield fired the ball into the side netting creating a situation where one part of the ground thought he'd scored, and the other part knew he hadn't.
Five minutes later, Whitfield was involved again as his shot was flicked on by Otis Khan, with his attempt to convert coming off a Barnet player for a corner as it span just wide. Yeovil tried a change of personnel with Francois Zoko coming on for Ben Whitfield, and the Glovers were inches away from claiming the lead with the game ticking into the final 20 minutes, as a Tom Eaves knockdown found Otis Khan, but his shot crashed off the underside of the crossbar and back out.
Barnet's chances were few and far between - Artur Krysiak had to be alert to a John Akinde run through, smothering the ball as the striker ran through. The Bees hadn't had a single shot on goal until 84 minutes into the game - but then they struck gold with a classic bit of smash'n'grab. Curtis Weston found substitute Alex Nicholls and he fired past Krysiak for a 0-1 lead that really didn't really reflect what had gone before that lead.
With six minutes remaining, Yeovil grabbed one decent chance to equalise just as the clock ticked around to 90 minutes. Francois Zoko and Otis Khan broke clean through on goal, but Khan's shot was smothered well by Bees keeper Jamie Stephens and the visitors managed to hang on for the win, by running the ball into the corners during the four minutes worth of added time. That ensured the Glovers dropped out of the play-offs, and down to 10th place, albeit with a long way to go before being in that top seven becomes truly important in May.
