Yeovil Town won their way through the First Round stages of the Football League Trophy at Huish Park tonight, although needed a bizarre winning goal to divide the two sides. The 1-0 scoreline was achieved when AFC Bournemouth loanee Harry Cornick provided a cross into the box that was sliced into his own net by Barnet defender Bira Dembele. In a match in which both teams struggled to warm the hands of the two goalkeepers, that was as much as was needed to seal the game in a low key encounter watched by just 1,203 spectators at the ground.
The Glovers went into the match making two changes to their line-up from Saturday. Jakub Sokolik dropped out of the squad, with him carrying a cast on his arm to protect himself from a fractured wrist he played through last Saturday. That allowed Alex Lacey to drop into the heart of defence, and for a 4-4-2 formation to be used. Not many would have predicted the man who would partner Shaun Jeffers up front - Omar Sowunmi was given a chance to show what he could do at the other end of the field as a front line striker, despite Ryan Bird and Mark Beck being available and on the bench. There was no sign of non-contract player David Norris, with it later being confirmed that he had broken ties with the club in advance of the transfer window closing, which would allow him choice of who he signs for next.
The first half was a near non-event, with Barnet edging the game on chances, but without Artur Krysiak needing to do too much to protect his goal. Their best chance came from an improbable distance as a 35 yard free kick from Aaron McLean grazed the top of the crossbar. Bira Dembele headed over the crossbar midway through the half, and then was unwittingly involved at the other end of the pitch. A Harry Cornick cross into the box seemed to be going nowhere, until the defender stuck out a boot and sliced it into his own net - incredibly Yeovil hadn't had a single shot during the game at that point, yet were a goal to the good.
Josh Wakefield had to be withdrawn with an ankle injury before the break, that will make him a doubt for Saturday, and just past the hour mark Omar Sowunmi was replaced after going down with cramp with Ryan Bird replacing him. Gradually as the second half wore on, Yeovil began to show some assertion at the attacking end of the park, as a Matt Dolan long range attempt went wide of the post, whilst a Harry Cornick effort was deflected over for a corner. Then Shaun Jeffers fired over from close range, followed by Jordan Gibbons shooting over the bar from a longer distance attempt. Whilst there was nothing to actually trouble Jamie Stephens in the Barnet goal, it at least showed a second period that was more befitting of the scoreline, even if the final match statistics might raise a few eyebrows! In truth, although Stephens had to do little, neither did Artur Krysiak - he saved a late free kick effort, but otherwise just had to mop things up. A game of very few genuine chances, and one with a very unusual winning goal.
