Yeovil Town crashed to a 2-0 defeat this afternoon as former trialist Marvin Elliott scored twice on his home debut for Crawley Town. The former Bristol City midfielder had played in the club's pre-season friendly against Dorchester Town but was allowed to look elsewhere due to his lack of match fitness. Just under two months later, he resurfaced at the Sussex club, and scored two headers inside three minutes to send the Glovers home with a deserved defeat. Yeovil's best period came during the first half when Joel Grant struck the woodwork, but they withered badly after the break, with the home team growing in confidence after their goals.
Cardiff City loanee Ben Nugent dropped out of the squad due to a hamstring injury, and his position in the side was taken by Jakub Sokolik, who was able to assume his more favoured centre-back role. On the bench there was a return for James Berrett and James Hayter as they recovered from thigh and groin injuries respectively, meaning that only Brendan Moloney and Simon Gillett remained on the long term injury list.
The first half took a while to warm up, with it taking around ten or fifteen minutes before either side managed to create a chance. When one did materialise though, it was a good one, with Joel Grant striking the foot of the goalpost from the edge of the box, whilst Crawley's first chance saw Jimmy Smith head wide from a Josh Simpson cross.
Overall, it was the Glovers who had the slight attacking edge, with Crawley looking rather shot-shy when they did threaten the Yeovil goal, with their players choosing to over-elaborate their passing rather than have a crack on goal. Yeovil should have been ahead midway through the half, when AJ Leitch-Smith fed Kieffer Moore, and he out-paced former Glovers trialist Joe Walsh, only for his final touch to let him down, as he wastefully blazed the ball over the bar from inside the box.
That was pretty much Kieffer's final significant moment in the game, as a hamstring injury forced him off, seeing Kevin Dawson come on as his replacement, meaning that Joel Grant went up front with Leitch-Smith. Grant was denied by excellent reactions from home keeper Jamie Ashdown after that reshuffle, but overall the chances began to dry up at both ends of the pitch, meaning that whilst it was a reasonable 45 minutes, it was one that was suffering from diminishing returns. A Nathan Ralph long range drive was slightly clumsily palmed over his crossbar by Ashdown in the closing stages.
Gary Johnson presumably felt that end to the half wasn't what he wanted as he more or less reversed his positional changes at half time - withdrawing substitute Kevin Dawson and introducing James Hayter as a second substitute, as Joel Grant moved back onto the wing. Instead it was Crawley who went on the offensive, as Lanre Oyebanjo forced Jake Kean into his first proper save of the match.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Crawley's improved performance got themselves a goal as Gwion Edwards was able to beat Nathan Smith down the right flank, and his cross into the box was met by a powerful Marvin Elliott header - Glovers 1-0 down. Two minutes later and the home side doubled their lead, as a Jimmy Smith cross, recycled from a corner, saw Marvin Elliott again beat his marker, heading home with a very similar looking goal, and with Yeovil's defending having gone seriously missing.
Crawley could have even added one or two others around that period, as Yeovil wobbled in their defensive duties, meaning that their chances at the other end pretty much dried up as they tried to sort out their defensive problems. On the rare occasions they did manage to get to the other end of the field, some questionable officiating by the East Stand linesman let them down, whilst any of the better moves up the field seemed to break down as the final pass got snuffed out by a home side that were now able to defend in numbers. Jack Price fired wide of the target, whilst players seemed to be showing their frustration when Joel Grant's dreadfully sliced attempt on goal earned him an earful from Joe Edwards for losing his team the opportunity.
They briefly threatened to set up a goal that might have created a grand finale, as a set piece saw both Aaron Martin and Jakub Sokolik force Jamie Ashdown into two quick saves. But in truth the club's second half performance was a shadow of their first, and once Marvin Elliott scored his quick-fire double, the Glovers never truly looked like they were going to get back into it. The end was a little bit too predictable for some fans to bear as a small number used the two minute injury time announcement to make an early dash for the trains home.
