Yeovil Town gained a relatively comfortable passage through to the Second Round of the FA Cup this afternoon, as they knocked out old rivals Hereford United. The 3-0 scoreline was gained thanks to three long range strikes, with Ed Upson, Andy Williams and Dominic Blizzard's goals all worth catching when the highlights packages become available.
The Glovers went into the match having to make five changes to their team thanks to a mix of international call-ups, blocks by parent club, and the odd injury. Nathan Jones dropped out because of his knee injury, whilst Marek Stech and Conor Clifford were away on international duty. Gavin Massey and Darren Purse were prevented from playing by their parent clubs. In their place came Luke Ayling, Gareth Stewart, Oli Johnson, Andy Williams and Paul Huntington on like-for-like swaps as Yeovil continued with their diamond formation for the third successive match.
Overall the game was a scrappy one at times, being played on a soft looking spongy pitch that wasn't likely to induce good football. The Glovers tended to play it long, sending the ball up the channels for Kieran Agard to run onto. The former Everton striker produced an early attempt that went just over the bar. At the other end, good defensive blocks stopped Nathan Elder getting near Gareth Stewart in the Yeovil goal, whilst another Elder chance went wide of the target.
With 25 minutes gone, Yeovil grabbed a valuable opening goal, when Ed Upson got two bites of the the cherry on a long range shot. His first attempt was blocked, but when the loose ball came back to him, he drove the ball home into the bottom corner to give a crucial 1-0 lead. Crucial because it seemed to kill the play for the remainder of the first half, with the Bulls struggling to get past a compact Yeovil diamond midfield, and the pressure on the Glovers to get goals diminished a touch by Upson's opener.
The Bulls clearly weren't too happy at their first half performance, making a double substitution at the break in an attempt to get back into the match. A Nathan Elder flicked header almost caught out Gareth Stewart, who had to back peddle to stop the ball going over his line, jamming on the brakes just in time as he caught the ball.
With their first attack of the second period, the Glovers extended their lead, thanks to Hereford old boy Andy Williams. Born in Hereford, schooled in Hereford and with three spells with the Bulls behind him, perhaps booing him was somewhat harsh on the local lad. But he exacted revenge by weaving his way in from the right flank, planting a beautifully curled shot into the far top corner to double Yeovil's lead, and put the Glovers on the edge of going through.
That victory was confirmed 18 minutes from time, when Dominic Blizzard was given room in the same area of the park as Williams had got 15 minutes earlier. His strike was a little straighter than his team-mate's but the end result was the same, and at 3-0 there wasn't going to be any way back for the Bulls. In between the second and the third, Hereford substitute Delroy Facey forced Gareth Stewart into his one real big save of the afternoon, as the stand-in keeper dived low to his left, but in reality the League Two side didn't test the Glovers goalkeeping coach enough on the day to threaten to get back into the game.
A worthy win for the three excellent strikes, even if perhaps the final 3-0 scoreline didn't quite describe the balance of play, with the Glovers having few other attempts on goal apart from those long-rangers. The latter part of the second half was a rare chance to relax, knowing that Yeovil were in the Second Round draw, and they will be praying to come out of the hat first for once.
