Yeovil Town and Leyton Orient served up a miserly 0-0 draw at Brisbane Road with both defences well on top throughout the majority of the game. Some 0-0 draws are pulsating classics, whilst others are stagnant affairs and this one definitely fell into the latter category. This was certainly not the season of giving.
The Glovers made just one change to last week's side that travelled to Doncaster, with Terry Skiverton starting in defence, replacing the suspended Marcus Stewart. That meant a shuffle throughout the side with Lee Peltier moving into central midfield where he was to have an outstanding game.
The first half was an inert affair, with Yeovil's 4-5-1 often leaving James Walker isolated, but in doing so ensuring that Orient could find few gaps in the Yeovil defence. Perhaps manager Russell Slade felt at half time that the formation was too stifling, as Lloyd Owusu was introduced and the Glovers reverted to a 4-4-2. That opened the game up a little more at both ends, but still not enough to break the deadlock.
For Orient, their best chance of the match came when Tamika Mkandawire's header was brilliantly saved by Steve Mildenhall, whilst there was also a late opportunity for substitute Efe Echanomi to seal the game, but Mildy smothered the ball at the striker's feet.
The Glovers found that the dangerous crosses whipped in by Zoltan Stieber weren't really finding the end product that they needed, although they were not helped by a rather dreadful performance by referee Richard Beeby. The Northamptonshire official turned down three worthy penalty appeals for the Glovers with Terry Skiverton on the end of an Orient elbow, whilst shirt pulls on Paul Warne and Lloyd Owusu were also not spotted by the hapless official who stalled the game far too often, blowing up for 41 fouls during the game, but generally baulking at giving the ones that mattered.
All in all though, four points out of six on their pre-Christmas travels against two play-off contenders is not something to be sniffed at, leaving the Glovers off the play-off positions now only on goal difference in 8th place, but when it comes down to analysing the highlights of the 2007-08 season, this one is unlikely to feature.
