Yeovil Town went down to their first home defeat of the season this afternoon, when league leaders Leyton Orient committed a smash'n'grab raid on their hosts - with their only true on target shot all afternoon. A 57th minute strike from Adam Boyd that beat Steve Mildenhall at his near post was all Orient needed to keep their impressive opening start to the season going.
The Glovers found themselves largely on top throughout the majority of the game, only to find turning possession into clear-cut chances to be a harder task. After a touching minute-worth of applause for former left-back Paul Smith, who died on Thursday, the first half showed both sides to be strong ground-ball passing teams, with the Glovers seeing a little more of the ball and pushing Orient back into their own half.
However, there was probably not too much in the way of clear-cut chances - Paul Warne's drive inside the box was saved by visiting keeper Stuart Nelson, whilst Lloyd Owusu's header from a Matthew Rose cross looped just wide of the target. Orient didn't really threaten at all - their best moment was a Tamika Mkandawire effort from the edge of the box that had Steve Mildenhall scrambling to recover ground.
The second half promised more of the same, but Boyd shocked the home fans when he fired home on the angle from the left flank, with Mildenhall falling awkwardly close to his near post. On his next goal kick, the keeper collapsed on the deck and needed a stretcher to get him off the field, with Mildy suffering muscle spasms in the hip area that caused obvious concerns for the Glovers medical staff. After a six minute stoppage, club captain Terry Skiverton made his first appearance of the season - as a goalkeeper!
The Glovers put the Orient goal under siege for the remainder of the match, with Skivo having to do little more than pick up a couple of daisy-cutters - Orient never looked like extending their lead. Disappointingly though, the surge did not produce the equalising goal, even if it did produce the League One debuts of winger Jerahl Hughes and striker Wilfried Domoraud, who put in good cameo performances as attempts were made to make that pressure count.
Both Scott Guyett and Marcus Stewart had headers saved by Nelson as the game closed off, but the best 'save' of the lot was Tamika Mkandawire's outstanding block tackle on Paul Warne in the dying minutes just as the former Oldham man was about to lift the trigger. Orient ensured they finished Saturday on top of the table. The Glovers slip down to 5th, but will be bemused that they didn't end the day with something to show for their efforts.
