Yeovil Town's First Team have returned for pre-season training this morning as part of the formal preparations for the 2009-10 season. The currently small squad should be augmented today by the arrival of new players and trialists at Huish Park, including defender Stefan Stam and right-back Danny Hutchins, who should formally put pen to paper on their new contracts today.
Last season's squad met up on Monday for a trip to former player Lee Archer's fitness studios in Bristol where they went through VO2 tests - a recognised benchmark for assessing an individual's ability to transport and utilize oxygen during incremental exercise, which reflects the physical fitness of the player.
They will have now been joined by Hutchins and Stam, with the rumourmill suggesting that former Bristol City winger Scott Murray has arrived at Huish Park this morning, although this has yet to be confirmed. Doubtless there will be plenty more on their way. However, we'll have to wait and see if Terrell Forbes is one of them - there has been little mention of the Club Captain in the past couple of weeks, and the acid test will be whether he shows for pre-season training, given that he is now no longer under contract at the club. Goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar is out in Canada on international duty, but has also yet to commit to a new deal.
Over the summer, a catalogue of players have been linked with a move to Huish Park, including Kevin Gall (Carlisle News and Star), Anthony Barry (Liverpool Daily Post), Dan Stratford (Washington Post), Scott Murray (Exeter Express and Echo), Stefan Stam (Sky Sports), Jonathan Obika, Andros Townsend, David Noble, James Wilson (Sunday Independent) and Rene Howe (Peterborough Evening Telegraph). Of those so far, only Stam has been confirmed, but this should be the week where the others begin to be confirmed ... or turn up playing for other clubs. However, boss Terry Skiverton has tended to keep his cards close to his chest throughout the summer, so expect a few surprises along the way.
