Yeovil Town's home match against Hereford United on Tuesday night will see Andy Penn (West Midlands) take charge of proceedings. We've not had Mr Penn for a while now, but he's certainly been a regular in our matches over the years, stretching all the way back to our Conference days.
We are somewhat less complimentary about some of Mr Penn's previous performances. He managed an undistinguished effort in the match at home to Scunthorpe United back on 25th November 2006. Then in another match against Scunny in March 2004 at Glanford Park we described him as "an irritatingly inconsistent official who never really gained control of the game".
Mr Penn is an official who excels in extending games beyond the bounds of reality. A February 2006 home match against MK Dons saw the visitors grabbing a 94th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw. But probably his most infamous moment for wonky stopwatches came in May 1999 when he added on nine minutes of injury time that allowed Cheltenham Town into the Football League on the back of a 3-2 win and a 97th minute winner.
He did the same trick on Saturday - refereeing the MK Dons vs Leicester City match that saw ten minutes of additional time played, with Leicester scoring 97 minutes into the match. We'd therefore recommend that you advise your nearest and dearest to leave the key under the doormat and to not wait up and to prepare yourself for a little bit of random card waving for nothing in particular.
Into 2007-08 and Mr Penn took charge of the infamous FA Cup match at Plainmoor against Torquay United. We don't think our match reporter would have even dared suggest the match referee had any influence on what was a rather horrible day. He earlier did the 0-3 home defeat against Nottingham Forest that season of which he had little impact on the game.
Mr Penn will be assisted by David Belbin (Middlesex) and Richard Martin (Somerset). The Fourth Official will be Stephen Phipps (Oxfordshire).
