The Football League Trophy has had its sponsorship deal with Johnstone's Paint extended until the summer of 2012. The present deal was due to run out next summer, but it will continue to be known as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy for an additional three seasons.
The Football League claim that during the first two years of the new sponsorship, crowds went up by 69 percent. This is claimed to be due to competition changes such as the scrapping of extra time, increased regionalisation of earlier rounds, special ticketing offers for junior supporters and a number of clubs scheduling slightly earlier kick-offs. In addition, guidelines have been introduced for clubs to field teams of a particular strength.
