Yeovil Town collected all three points at Edgar Street today as their superb league record against Hereford United continued with a 2-1 win. Both Glovers goals came in quick succession and from opposite flanks, midway through the first half, with Danny Schofield and Paul Warne putting Yeovil 2-0 up. Home substitute Bradley Hudson-Odoi pulled a goal back eight minutes from time, but Yeovil were superior throughout much of the game and so came home with a deserved win.
The Glovers lined up with just one change to Tuesday's starting line-up with goalkeeper Asmir Begovic being recalled in what manager Russell Slade admitted was a difficult decision. On the bench there was the first sighting of new signing Andre McCollin following his transfer from Fisher Athletic yesterday.
There wasn't much to choose between the two sides early on, although it did appear that when it came to the final third of the field that the Glovers had a bit more savvy about them than their hosts. Whilst Hereford were more inclined to worry the corner flag than the goalframe, the Glovers were creating useful half-chances through the likes of Terry Skiverton and Kieran Murtagh.
Their two goals though came just three minutes apart, and both owed much to the width of the Edgar Street pitch - the largest in professional football outside Wembley. On 19 minutes, Danny Schofield received a lay-off from the excellent Paul Warne, and when Schofield cut inside from the flank and unleashed an angled shot, former Glover Ben Smith helped his friends by deflecting the ball slightly on its way.
Three minutes later and Yeovil doubled their lead, with again Hereford being exposed from the wings. Aidan Downes produced a crossfield pass, and with Paul Warne having moved out wide, the striker again cut in and fired home to put Yeovil 2-0 up with just 22 minutes gone. At present Warne has been involved in every Yeovil goal scored so far this season, showing just how much he could have to offer in this campaign.
Hereford looked a bit shellshocked and Yeovil rode out the first period under little pressure, with the home side not even getting close to Asmir Begovic's goal before the break, with some of their occasional shots woeful. The second half continued that theme, and Yeovil looked to be having a bit of a stroll in the park, with Danny Schofield and substitute Craig Alcock both having chances to absolutely seal the game.
The home side began to press a touch as the game drew to a close and they made several tactical and personnel changes. One of those substitutes Bradley Hudson-Odoi took advantage of some slightly nervous-looking goalkeeping from Asmir Begovic when his weak punch fell at the feet of Ben Smith. His shot looked to have been smothered by Begovic, but Hudson-Odoi rushed in and scored from close range, despite the Yeovil players claiming that Begovic had the ball knocked out of his hands by the striker.
The final eight minutes, plus four minutes injury time, should have set up a grandstand finish, but Hereford failed to get it together, with their best chance being a Stephen Guinan header that hit the outside of the goalframe, albeit with Begovic looking like he'd got that post covered.
So three priceless points were ultimately won to put the Glovers into joint 4th position (with Walsall and Brighton) in the very early league table. That start is exactly what Russell Slade's young and inexperienced side needed to give them self-belief for the coming season. It's important not to get carried away by the results achieved by the first two matches, as neither Walsall nor Hereford look as though they will be in the top half of the table this season. However, it is a good foundation to build on, and with the wide players and Paul Warne particularly on form today, there are some encouraging patterns forming here.
