Peter Quince Theatre Company’s new play about Yeovil Town Football Club includes literally all of the Glovers’ season thus far.
Following the story of Penny and Yandle, two die hard Town fans, the play pits their relationship against Yeovil’s first season in the football league. Penny falls in love with Hugo Rodrigues, Yandle wants to be Nick Crittenden, but will either of them forsake Gary Johnson for each other?
The events of the season on and off the field have been unexpectedly inspirational for the writing of the play, as Nick White explains:
“Picture this. I say to the club can I write a play about you? They say Yes and Gary Johnson goes out of his way to help. Yeovil record wins, a couple of defeats, and (so far) only one draw, against the then leaders. Then we play in the FA Cup and after thrashing good opposition we get to play Liverpool. Then there’s a fire. Then the fans ignore wretched Christmas results to queue throughout the night, in the pouring rain on a cold night in December, to show their love of Yeovil, and determination to get a golden ticket. I am amazed every time I read the Western Gazette. I know that Somerset Sound will keep me up to date with this amazing season. The Glovers never fail to inspire.”
The play, which is still looking for a title and is currently called “Up The Glovers!”, will receive a WORLD EXCLUSIVE reading on BBC Somerset Sound (1566AM) on Friday 2nd January 2004 at 10 am. The full premiere of the play will be at a charity performance at the Octagon Theatre, Yeovil on the 23rd July.
PQTC will be releasing an extract of the play for the press in March. To be sure of receiving it, get in touch with Nick White (details below)
PQTC are also producing another new play, “The Second Spaceship” by Will Gore, to be toured across the region in the spring.
