15 March 2008 : Cherries See Glovers Well And Truly Plucked
Yeovil Town crashed 2-0 against AFC Bournemouth this afternoon at the Fitness First Stadium, in a game that they showed little signs of getting anything out of. First half goals from Danny Hollands and the highly rated Sam Vokes sealed their fate, and nothing in the second half suggested that they were going to get anything out of the fixture.

The Glovers went into the match with Terry Skiverton missing due to sinus problems that have been causing him severe headaches all week, along with Liam Bridcutt, who is on antibiotics due to a virus. That added to the midweek loss of Paul Warne and Jaime Peters, and manager Russell Slade stated that he was selecting from the 15 outfield players that remained available to him once all of the injuries and illnesses had been accounted for. On a positive note Lee Peltier (suspension) and Terrell Forbes (back) were able to return to the side.

Despite a bright opening five minutes, the Glovers got off to the worst possible start when a half-clearance from a Max-Alain Gradel cross fell into the path of Danny Hollands. No-one closed him down and that allowed him time and space to strike the ball home for the opening goal.

The Glovers could have hit back when a Martin Woods volleyed cross was headed just over the crossbar by Simon Church, whilst Woods himself fired just wide of the target. Defender Scott Guyett also headed wide of the mark. But it was the Glovers back line that were looking jittery when the ball reached the other end of the park and at times were guilty of giving the Cherries players far too much time on the ball.

That was certainly true of the 2nd goal which arrived just after the half hour mark. A rather over-hit corner appeared to be going nowhere, but when it was picked up on the far side, Brett Pitman put in the cross in from the opposite side and Sam Vokes evaded whichever Yeovil player was meant to be marking him, and he headed home to double Bournemouth's lead.

Half time saw Marvin Williams pushed into the fray as a replacement for Matthew Rose, despite the winger being of borderline fitness in the lead-up to the game with a foot injury. But the second period did not ignite a significant improvement in Yeovil Town's performance, with the game being played at a low tempo.

If anything the Cherries threatened to increase their lead, with former Brentford striker Jo Kuffour breaking past Mark Lynch then landing a cross towards Brett Pitman, who evaded the marking of Lee Peltier, but thankfully Scott Flinders got down to push the shot away. The on-loan keeper was one of the few players to come out with credit from the day.

A slither of hope came in the closing stages after Lloyd Owusu had a header palmed away by home keeper David Forde. From the resulting corner, Jean-Francois Christophe had a header blocked on the line that could have set up an exciting finale, but the shot was saved. With that any flickering flame died, and Yeovil deservedly came home pointless.

Around the division, Crewe Alexandra came home victorious with a 3-0 away win over Gillingham in the day's relegation six-pointer - a result that cuts the Gills four points adrift, albeit with a game in hand on most of their rivals. That result means that the gap between the Glovers and the relegation spots remains at nine points, although today's wins for Crewe and Cheltenham Town mean that two of the three clubs that are sandwiched in the middle have now closed the gap somewhat.
