26 July 2003 : Decisions, Decisions
With two weeks left until the new season kicks off, and Yeovil Town launches into its first ever Football League campaign, the time for hard choices arrived. Gary Johnson has released five of the trialists who have been with the club for varying amounts of time pre-season. Let go are David Artell, Alex Jeannin, Jose Sebastiao, Paul Shepherd and Andy Taylor. Johnson praised all of them for their efforts and quality as footballers, but said that in his opinion they were not better than those already under contract at the club. He specially picked out Jeannin for praise, and one rather feels that budget permitting he would have liked to sign him, but revealed that Hugo Rodrigues, who received the offer of a one year contract on Thursday, had just edged out the French centre-back because of his greater "scope for improvement." Johnson has recommended Jeannin to Exeter City, and expects him to impress there.

Retained for a further week of trials are Mark Boyce and Jake Edwards. Boyce is a right back who was at the Watford Academy under Johnson and has had a rather disjointed career since then, wandering through Non-league in the South-East. Edwards is a forward who cost Telford £20,000 from Blackpool in 2000, and stayed for two years. He has most recently been plying his trade in the U.S.A.

With Sebastiao released and any future Michael McIndoe has at the club diminishing by the day it is not too surprising that a late trialist of the left wing variety will be arriving at Huish Park next week. Andy Watson, lately at Doncaster Rovers, is a player of some talent who has been linked with a number of bigger clubs higher up the divisions. However none of the speculation and rumour has come to fruition. Ian Snodin, a Sky co-commentator with Gary Johnson on a number of occasions, signed him from Garforth Town for a fee of £25,000. Doncaster tried hard to resign him ahead of his contract running out this summer, but his agent - can you see where this might be going? - advised him that he should be aiming higher. He departed under something of a cloud. Most recently he had a one day trial at Barnsley, with the club announcing, rather cryptically that: ""We had a young winger - Andy Watson - in yesterday but he has not been back today."
