League Two side Oldham Athletic have confirmed the appointment of former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes. The 44 year old has been given the reins as a replacement to Frankie Bunn who was sacked after their Boxing Day 6-0 defeat against Carlisle United. Scholes has been given a contract at Boundary Park until the summer of 2020, and will be in the dugout for Tuesday night's match against Yeovil Town.
Although Scholes has got some backroom coaching experience, he has spent most of his time following retirement operating as a pundit for ITV and BT Sport. This will be his first front line appointment, taking charge of the club he supported as a boy. Former Oldham coach Mick Priest will be returning to Boundary Park as his assistant.
Oldham Athletic owner Abdallah Lemsagam has said of the appointment:
"Paul has won everything there is to win in football. He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see. It's no secret how much he has wanted this job in the past and how much he loves this club, so I'm very happy to bring him into our family at Oldham Athletic. Paul will have my backing 100% and hopefully we can work together to bring success back to this club."
At present there's no on-the-record mention of any restrictions Scholes may face in his dealings with National League side Salford City. As part of a consortium of former Manchester United players, he owns a 10 percent stake in the fifth tier club. Media reports suggested that there would be restrictions place on him performing any loan or transfer deals between the two clubs, but the small print in that area has yet to be revealed.
Expect a mini media circus to break out at Boundary Park before and after Tuesday night's match.
