Tuesday night's League Two opponents Oldham Athletic will almost certainly have a new man in charge by the time the two clubs meet at Boundary Park. According to BBC Sport, the Latics plan to hold a press conference at 2.00p.m. on Monday where they will unveil former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes as their successor to Frankie Bunn, who was sacked as manager on December 27th.
The unveiling of Scholes as their new manager has been a lengthy and complicated one. Since his retirement as a player, Scholes has been under contract with BT Sport as a pundit, meaning that he wouldn't be available to them at that point onwards. However, the more fundamental question was whether Scholes would be allowed to act as Oldham manager, given he is part of a consortium of former Manchester United players who own a 10 percent stake in National League side Salford City, who could be playing in League Two next season.
On Friday, the Football League were reported to have cleared Scholes' appointment, with the belief that there may be some conditions attached to that, involving restrictions on whether Oldham and Salford can transfer or loan players between them at any time. However, they did not expect the 44 year old to sell his shareholding at any time, in order to take up the job.
As a result, Scholes is expected to be in the dugout for Tuesday night's match at Boundary Park, which will inevitably bring a bit of a circus to the fixture, given the national press and cameras will probably be queuing up for the game. The other change that will happen, is that Caretaker Manager Pete Wild will move back to his rather more low key positing of managing Oldham's Under-16s side.
Wild has been a rather large success at Boundary Park. As an Oldham Athletic supporter, he's guided them to four wins, one draw and three defeats since taking over on December 27th, including the shock FA Cup Third Round victory over Fulham that caused Yeovil Town's original Saturday trip to the North-West to be postponed.
