Yeovil Town's attendance during Tuesday night's League Two match against Port Vale once again broke a record at Huish Park. The 2,174 that was announced for the November 27th crowd was the lowest for a Football League match, once again continuing the trend over the last three years, as supporters vote with their feet amidst poor results and performances.
The 'record' beat last September's 2,205 that was set for the home match against Morecambe. Once again, a rainy Tuesday during term time provided the backdrop for that new low to be set, although the recent results against Stockport County and Macclesfield Town will have also heavily contributed towards that.
It's worth noting that around ten years ago, Yeovil Town switched from publicising the actual number of bodies inside the ground, to describing the 'attendance' as the number of tickets sold. This means that Season Ticket holders are always included in the attendance, regardless of whether they were inside the ground, or sat at home. It would also include those who had obtained 'day tickets' but due to illness, change of plans or apathy did not get to the game.
Of the lowest 20 gates for Football League matches, the vast majority have been set during either this season or last season, with the September 2016 historical low of 2,749 against Hartlepool United now having been beaten eighteen times over the last two years. All of the current bottom 20 have been set under the current first team management, providing an obvious trend for any of the club's financial people to be worried about.
The club's average attendance for the 2018-19 season currently stands at 2,997. This is a very marginal increase on the final average attendance for the 2017-18 season, which saw 2,941 per game turn up. However, it's worth stressing that this includes the games against Swindon Town (4,201) and Exeter City (4,223) that are likely to represent the peak crowds for the season - the visit of Tranmere Rovers (3,007) is the only other League gate to stand above 3,000, whilst in the future only matches against Cheltenham Town on New Year's Day and second placed Lincoln City look likely to sit above that value.
