Officials for the FA Cup First Round tie between Yeovil Town FC and Stockport County have been published by the Football Association. The match takes place on Saturday 10th November 2018, with a 3.00p.m. kick-off at Huish Park. The man in charge will be referee David Rock (Northamptonshire).
He is a National League referee, who has been officiating at that level since the summer of 2014. We can find one instance back in March 2010 when he took over the whistle midway through a League Two fixture between Northampton Town and Darlington, after the original referee, Andy Penn, was injured and unable to continue.
There is one single fixture where he's been named in advance as the match referee at a Football League ground. That occasion was for Yeovil Town vs Solihull Moors in November 2016, meaning that we will have the unusual privilege of hosting him for both of the occasions when he's stepped up to this level. On that first occasion he had quite a strong influence on the outcome of the match, but it's hard to be critical of him for that moment. Midfielder Kevin Dawson had committed two 'yellow card' tackles during the first half, and for the second one, Mr Rock decided to very obviously invite captain Darren Ward over and to make quite clear that Dawson was on a last warning.
With Dawson needing to survive 55 minutes without making another foul, it was an obvious risk to keep him out there. So when he committed a small trivial foul ten minutes after the break, there was only one outcome. Frustratingly what followed was a 2-0 lead collapsing into a 2-2 draw, and ultimately for Yeovil to lose the match in the replay. It had to be seen as a self-inflicted error though, rather than one the referee could be blamed for.
Mr Rock works for a company called All For Sport, who provide training and coaching for Physical Education teachers at primary and secondary schools, providing a Teacher Development programme. He is their Operations Director, having worked there since 2005, and has been a referee since the start of the 2007-08 season.
Mr Rock will be assisted by Thomas Harty (West Midlands) and Christopher Husband (Worcestershire). The Fourth Official will be Scott Jackson (Taunton).
