Former Yeovil Town loanee Lewis Wing scored his first goal for Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening. The 23 year old scored the winning goal in a League Cup tie against Premier League side Crystal Palace, as his club moved into the final eight of the competition with a 1-0 victory. The goal itself was a spectacular one, as he volleyed a 20 yard shot into the roof of the net during first half injury time, to give them a Quarter-Final home tie against Burton Albion.
The goal continues Wing's progression in a side pushing for promotion to the Premier League. Wednesday night's game was his eighth appearance in a Boro first team shirt, but the first time he's found the net. The winning goal was good timing for him, given that manager Tony Pulis had just recalled him to the side after a one month break from first team duties.
"First half performance was excellent and again we got into a lot of great positions and had opportunities. It takes a wonder goal from Wingy (Lewis Wing) to give us that lead and as I've said I think we've played well this year in lots of games. It's just that final third and having someone to put the ball in in the final third, and luckily Wingy's come up with a special one tonight to win the game. He's signed a new contract and I'm really pleased he's with us. He's got a long way to go and there's things that he needs to improve on, but his enthusiasm to play and to want to play and to learn is first class. We've got to make sure we encourage that."
Wing was given a new Middlesbrough contract midway through October, with them giving him a deal that now runs until June 2022. You can watch his goal via the clip below (starting 2 mins 10 seconds through the video).
NOTE: The match commentary, supplied by Quest, once again has got it wrong. They describe Wing's strike as his "first ever goal in professional football". He did of course score three times during his loan spell with Yeovil Town during the 2017-18 season, so this claim is inaccurate.
