20 October 2018 : Yeovil 0 Tranmere 0 : Attacking Play Cancelled Out By Both Sides
Yeovil Town and Tranmere Rovers battled out a 0-0 draw at Huish Park on Saturday afternoon in a match of few chances. The best of the Glovers efforts came from a couple of Tom James free kicks, and a Yoann Arquin effort that he put wide from close range. The majority of Tranmere's efforts came during the first period, with the second half disintegrating into fouls and free kicks as neither side managed to take control of the game - a result that sees Yeovil go up one place to 14th, whilst Tranmere stay in the play-off spots.

The Glovers went into the match making two changes to the team that took to the field against Bristol Rovers ten days ago. The first saw Gary Warren's return to the side, following his hamstring injury against Newport and that meant that Shaun Donnellan sat out as a substitute. Whilst Warren had recovered from his hamstring problem, Jordan Green had developed his own during training this week and he dropped off the teamsheet, with Yoann Arquin recalled to the starting line-up.

The opening period was one of few chances, with Connor Jennings firing well wide early on for the visitors. Yeovil's were a little less wayward, but glancing headers from Alex Fisher and Gary Warren were fairly easy for Scott Davies to deal with. The Glovers also saw a Tom James free kick go wide from 30 yards out. Tranmere's other efforts tended to be blocked out by defenders, rather than goalkeeper, with Oliver Banks and James Norwood getting themselves into dangerous positions but without Nathan Baxter getting busy.

The flow of the match wasn't helped by an injury to Steve McNulty that took too long to sort out, whilst James Norwood got involved in lengthy arguments with referee Chris Sarginson over his decision not to award him a free kick, ultimately leading to Norwood ending up in the referee's book. There was a tetchy feel to the match on the back of those non-decisions, with the match official letting them go on too many occasions.

Yeovil started the second half with an apparent message to up the tempo of the game. That seemed to work for a ten minute period, even if it was James Norwood who gained the first chance, as he volleyed a Jon Smith cross wide from inside the box. At the other end, Yeovil put more pressure on the Tranmere box, but only had an Olufela Olomola shot over the bar to show for that.

Both sides rang the changes - Yeovil's first one saw them bring on Omari Patrick, with the Bradford City loanee being put onto the right wing, whilst Yoann Arquin went up front, as Alex Fisher was withdrawn. Arquin had his side's best chance of the game midway through the second half, as a Carl Dickinson free kick to the back post saw him connect from close range, but again the ball went wide of the post, with Scott Davies having a very quiet afternoon overall.

If anything, the closing stages of the match disintegrated further. Once again, the quality of the officiating didn't help in this, with a Tom James foul on Paul Mullin resulting in a lengthy session of Tranmere players crowding out the referee, who produced a caution for James, and then appeared to also single out Carl Dickinson for the same, for something which had happened during the aftermath. The stop-start nature of that led to six minutes of injury time, but it was six minutes in which neither side looked likely to win the match - a late effort from James Norwood being as close as it came. Yeovil end the day one place higher in 14th place, but are still struggling to turn those home draws into the victories they will need if they are to push back into the top half of the table.
