Yeovil Town central defender Omar Sowunmi has signed a new contract with the club. The 22 year old former Ipswich Town academy player has agreed a two year contract with the Glovers that will keep him at Huish Park until the summer of 2020. He had fallen out of contract at the end of last season, leading to speculation as to his future, but that can now be put to bed.
Omar was brought into the club during June 2015 by former boss Paul Sturrock, but his attempt to blend into the first team during that season was curtailed by a September ankle injury that saw him stretchered off against AFC Wimbledon following a poor tackle by a Dons player. An attempt at a comeback during the autumn had to be aborted, with the same injury flaring up, and he ended up missing the remainder of the season, after having surgery to fix the problem, meaning that fans only saw him on eight occasions.
During the 2016-17 season, Omar's time was again restricted, with him spending the year as a front line striker, making just four starts in 14 appearances. His third season saw him switch to his original centre-back position, and early on it looked as though he was heading for another stop-start season. However, from mid-October onwards he began to cement a regular starting position in the side, playing a full 90 minutes in the vast majority of games that followed.
His overall form saw him pick up two Player of the Season Awards at the end of 2017-18, recognising his performances, particularly during the second half of that campaign. He'll now continue in that role over the next two seasons. Manager Darren Way has said of the agreement the various parties have reached today:
"Omar is a big signing for the future of this football club and we've put in a lot of effort to get this deal over the line. It's a big statement of intent from the owner and the chairman and allows us to keep the core of the squad from last season. He's developed at a very fast rate, which shows some of the others what can happen, and I'm excited that he's decided to pledge his future to Yeovil Town Football Club."
