The Football League have confirmed the list of sixteen Invited Clubs that will field Under-21 sides in next season's Football League Trophy. The 2018-19 Season will see Arsenal field a development side in the competition - in the last two seasons they've opted out, with their early feedback indicating that they regarded their involvement in the Premier League 2 competition, and their tendency to already blood their youngsters in the League Cup and FA Cup as sufficient for their needs.
For next season, the Gunners will be entering the competition. The Football League have reclarified the way in which teams are selected, pointing out that the Under-21 team 'invites' are initially offered to sixteen clubs with EPPP Category One academies whose first teams finished the highest during the 2017-18 season. It is only when those clubs reject the invitation that the offers are then passed over to the 17th, 18th, 19th etc club in the pyramid, dropping down to the Championship, if necessary.
The list of clubs that will field Under-21 sides in the 2018-19 competition are as follows:
Arsenal, Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion, Southampton, Chelsea, Stoke City, Everton, Swansea City, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, West Bromwich Albion, Manchester City, West Ham United, Middlesbrough, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Group Stage draw will take place in July, with the first round of fixtures scheduled to take place week commencing on Monday 3rd September. There are also a number of rule changes for the 2018-19 Season - see the article linked below for full details.
