Yeovil Town gained their second consecutive home victory on Saturday afternoon, with a 2-0 victory over Cambridge United. Whilst it wasn't a vintage Glovers performance, they hung in there after a low key first half, and took the lead ten minutes after the break when Nathan Smith volleyed home from an Alefe Santos free kick. The victory was sealed when former Motherwell striker Alex Fisher scored within ten seconds of coming on as a substitute, latching on to Rhys Browne's cross to help lift Yeovil up to 18th place in the table, and seven points clear of the drop positions.
The Glovers went into the match naming an unchanged starting line-up, with just one change on the bench seeing Barnsley midfielder Jared Bird recalled in favour of Connor Smith. The visitors arrived at Huish Park heavily depleted, with pantomime villain Jabo Ibehre out with concussion and Barry Corr not having agreed a new contract with their club, along with numerous other injury problems.
The first half was largely a non-event, with the visitors competing better in wet and miserable February conditions. Artur Krysiak had to get down low to thwart Uche Ikpeazu after he broke through, with the same player heading wide from a cross into the box after Yeovil had lost possession in midfield. Yeovil created little, with their one opportunity coming after Tom James cut in from the right flank, shooting wide of the post by a yard or two, with them unable to get their strikers involved in the game.
In truth Cambridge should have had their noses ahead. Whilst Liam O'Neil's effort from the edge of the box was comfortable for Krysiak, he wouldn't have been able to do much if Billy Waters had his shooting boots on - he was put through by Jevani Brown but sliced his shot wide of the target, thus meaning that the two teams went in at the break level.
The second period opened as the first one closed - with Cambridge missing a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead. Uche Ikpeazu's shot was parried into the path of Brad Halliday, but with the goal gaping and Krysiak on the deck, the full-back missed the open target on the rebound. That was to prove very costly indeed for the U's.
Tom James put a free kick comfortably over the bar, but with them still not having managed an on-target attempt they took the lead 54 minutes into the match. An Alefe Santos free kick was flicked on by Omar Sowunmi, and Nathan Smith showed all the poise of a centre-forward as he volleyed home from inside the box for 1-0 lead.
Cambridge made a double substitution, and still they looked like the team that was more likely to score the next goal - even if they couldn't quite pull the trigger. Yeovil looked tired in patches, and were probably glad they weren't having to chase the game. However, with six minutes remaining of a match that won't be remembered for too much other than the goals, they doubled their lead in an extraordinary way.
Former Motherwell striker Alex Fisher was introduced as the club's final substitute, replacing Francois Zoko. He barely had enough time to run from the dugout area and across the pitch before he was helping Yeovil to wrap up the game. Rhys Browne drove down the right wing, and when his cross came into the box, Fisher's run - pretty much from the half length of the pitch - allowed him the chance to fire home from inside the box. One touch, ten seconds on the pitch, and his first goal for the Glovers.
Cambridge United almost pulled one back straight away as Jevani Brown struck the woodwork, but it was that sort of an afternoon for them. Alex Fisher headed a Tom James cross over the bar at the other end, as the Glovers ran out as 2-0 winners. Far from vintage, occasionally looking a bit leggy, Yeovil Town weren't on top for many long spells of the game. But they dug in, and got the points, and that's the main thing that matters.
