Wednesday night saw Yeovil Town stay unmoved on January transfer deadline day, marking a sharp contrast to the busy events that had occurred at the same stage of the season last year. On this occasion, there were zero arrivals and zero departures on what is usually the busiest day of the footballing calendar, covering the final day in which teams can execute permanent transfers and loan transfers.
Much of the reasons for the quiet day at Huish Park can be put down to the fact that most of the 'late' activity had occurred last Friday and Saturday. The arrival of striker Alex Fisher from Motherwell was added to by a loan deal for Southampton attacker Ryan Seager and a permanent deal for West Bromwich Albion defender Shaun Donnellan.
Earlier in January, Yeovil Town had lost four of their loan players, who returned to their parent clubs, but immediately brought in four more replacement loanees, thus balancing out that loss. Midfielders Jared Bird (Barnsley) and Lewis Wing (Middlesbrough), defender Corey Whelan (Liverpool) and striker Marcus Barnes (Southampton) represented the new arrivals in the squad.
Matters on January transfer deadline day were not just about the incomings and outgoings. It was also about the sound of silence. The absence of any significant late rumours concerning winger Otis Khan and defender Omar Sowunmi, coupled with no sign that Bournemouth wanted to recall striker Sam Surridge meant that the Glovers ended the day with all three still on the club's books, and now guaranteed to stay until at least May 2018. The only downside to that silence, was that it effectively ended the club's interest in Southampton striker Olufela Olomola, who the Glovers had been trying to bring back to Somerset on a permanent deal - despite media reports that he was 'close' to signing, that fizzled out, and he has remained at St Mary's Stadium.
As such, an unusual aspect of the January 2018 transfer window was that Yeovil Town ended up with three additional bodies on the payroll, compared to when they started the month. The club now has a senior first team squad of 25 players (although one of those will not play again this season) - significantly above the usual options that a manager has had at his disposal at the club. The only caveat to that is that once Marcus Barnes returns to Huish Park following his ankle injury, that the club will have six loan players on their books, forcing them to leave one of those players sat in the stand on each matchday.
