Officials for the League Two fixture between Mansfield Town and Yeovil Town have been published by the Football League. The match takes place on Saturday 16th December 2017, at Field Mill, with a 3.00p.m. kick-off. The man in charge of the fixture will be referee Martin Coy (County Durham).
He is a brand new referee on the Football League circuit, having been promoted to this level in the summer of 2017. Mr Coy began refereeing in 2002, starting in the Durham Sunday League before working his way upwards. He was promoted to the latest level at the age of 33, after four seasons looking after the National League main division. His finale at that level was to take charge of a 2016-17 National League play-off match between Forest Green Rovers and Dagenham and Redbridge at the New Lawn.
So far, he's only taken charge of one Yeovil Town match - the August 2017 League Two home match against Coventry City. We won the match 2-0 and so were fairly happy, although we felt that he could have been a bit stronger in dealing with some of the efforts of Sky Blues players to try to interfere with his officiating - it looked like they were trying to take advantage of his inexperience. Their manager Mark Robins was less impressed after the game claiming that his team had been denied two blatant penalties:
"I'm disappointed and I'm also annoyed at the fact that we've had two - certainly one - unbelievably blatant penalties not given. Their second goal was a handball right in front of the dugout. Their player moved it forward with his arm and it wasn't deemed to be a handball, so I'm aggrieved at that. It was laughable but there were lots of decisions that weren't great. It sounds like sour grapes. I don't want to stand here and talk about decisions but it does have a bearing on things."
So far this season, he's taken charge of 17 matches, giving out three red cards, and just 30 yellow cards - at under two bookings a game, this definitely points to someone who is not from the school of Trevor Kettle.
Mr Coy will be assisted by Steven Plane (Worcestershire) and Paul Thompson (Derbyshire). The Fourth Official will be James Bell (Sheffield).
