Yeovil Town slumped to a 0-2 defeat this afternoon, after a Lincoln City side scored two second half goals to easily take all three points. In a physical game, the Glovers went behind five minutes into the second half, after Matt Green caught the Glovers on the counter-attack from their own corner, whilst the points were wrapped up twenty minutes later when Matt Rhead's header ensured that control of the match rapidly slipped away from the home side. The more worrying statistic was that it leaves Yeovil out of the relegation zone on goal difference, as they head towards the halfway point of the season.
The Glovers went into the match making three changes to their starting line-up, compared to last weekend's match, all of which appeared to be influenced by their midweek Checkatrade Trophy victory over AFC Wimbledon. Bevis Mugabi took the right-back slot, with Tom James moving across to the other full-back position, with Ryan Dickson unavailable with a neck injury. In midfield, Oscar Gobern was preferred to Alefe Santos, whilst Jordan Green came in on the right flank allowing Olufela Olomola to play up front. In the opposition line-up, Cameron Stewart got his first league start for Lincoln - good timing for him against a club he had a short loan spell with during 2010.
The opening stages saw Lincoln winning nearly all of the physical battles, thankfully without threatening the goal too much. The gameplan for Yeovil was scuppered by Oscar Gobern lasting just five minutes before he went down with an injury, to be replaced by Alefe Santos, with him suffering a leg injury. Bevis Mugabi headed over the crossbar from an Otis Khan corner, but otherwise much of the half was broken up by a lot of niggly fouls, with the feeling that referee Lee Collins was not really keeping a lid on things at times.
Lincoln produced the chance of the half, when Sean Raggett's header was touched onto the crossbar by Artur Krysiak from one of several corners they forced. However, it was all a bit scrappy at times - a Bevis Mugabi shot that was easily saved and a Michael Bostwick shot that went well over the bar was about as close as either team got in the closing stages.
The second half began with rather more fluent end-to-end football after the break, with both sides getting good chances. Matt Green's lengthy run saw the ball slipped through to Michael Bostwick, who should have buried his chance but instead shot wide. At the other end, James Bailey put through Olufela Olomola, but goalkeeper Josh Vickers reacted well to come off his line and save the shot.
That was to prove significant, as Yeovil Town got caught on the counterattack following a corner kick. Matt Rhead regained possession for the Imps and threaded a pass through to Matt Green. The Glovers seemed to be caught with too many players up field, leaving only James Bailey as the last man, and Green was able to confidently slot home as he came up against Artur Krysiak.
Disappointingly, that was the moment at which Yeovil's competitiveness in the match disappeared like a candle being blown out. A substitution was made, with Sam Surridge being introduced, but neither he or his teammates were to have a single shot on or off target in the 40 minutes that followed. Instead it was Lincoln who doubled their lead, with a clever cross from Neal Eardley 20 minutes later allowing big target man Matt Rhead a chance to head home from close range, for a 0-2 advantage.
Yeovil Town looked like a beaten side, and Lincoln even had the luxury of taking both of their strikers off in the closing stages, along with winger Cameron Stewart, to see the game out with fringe players. On the final whistle, loud boos rang out from a dreadful second half performance that sees Yeovil slip down to 20th, and kept out of the relegation slots only on goal difference. With only one point gained out of their last five matches, form has dipped badly, and what they have done in the Checkatrade Trophy and FA Cup is masking that fact. The result against Mansfield Town next Saturday may be more important to the club than Tuesday's FA Cup replay, even if the club's Directors and accountants may hold a different opinion.
