31 July 2017 : Mainline Station Works Likely To Disrupt Luton Trip
Yeovil Town supporters travelling to Luton Town this coming Saturday using railway services should note that there are major upgrade works commencing at London Waterloo station during the month of August. The station is being extended to allow for longer platforms, and therefore longer trains on certain routes, as part of a wider 800 million infrastructure upgrade that aims to provide 30 percent more passenger capacity on the network.

The upshot is that between August 5th and August 28th, Platforms 1-9 at London Waterloo will be closed to allow the construction work to take place. To mitigate this, they will temporarily reopen Platforms 20-24 (which is the old Waterloo International station platforms).

South-West trains have indicated during this period that there will be fewer services running, and that certain services may not call at the same stations that they usually do on a standard timetable. They therefore recommend that you check your specific service closely, just in case it has changed during the August period.

For the more simple journey from Yeovil Junction to London Waterloo, the National Rail timetable website shows hourly services leaving at 29 minutes past the hour, taking 2 hours 39 minutes. Going back, trains are timetabled to leave Waterloo at 20 minutes past the hour, taking 2 hours 23 minutes.

Because of the new platform layouts and closures, London Waterloo warn that passengers may experience delays when both entering and exiting the platforms because of the impact of funnelling passengers into a smaller number of platforms. They suggest that at peak times this could lead to queuing and up to 30 minute delays in accessing the platform. You're therefore advised not to leave it until the last minute to board your train, particularly as Saturday 5th August will be the first occasion that they will have introduced the new routing to the platforms - experience of similar work at London Bridge recently was that this created a bit of chaos. Allow extra time.
