Yeovil Town's opening pre-season match ended in victory tonight, although they had to work hard for it after Southern League Premier Division side Weymouth gave themselves an early lead. The Glovers went into the match selecting what appeared to be a 'first choice' line-up, with only Olufela Olomola and Omar Sowunmi left out of the starting line-up - goalkeeper Artur Krysiak and centre-back Tom James were not used tonight.
The Terras took a 23rd minute lead through two familiar sources. Calvin Brooks broke down the flank and delivered a cross that was converted from close range by Brandon Goodship, who netted on his first appearance since leaving Huish Park at the end of last season.
Yeovil had started well, but lost their rhythm after that goal. They did get a bit of good fortune for the equaliser. Weymouth goalkeeper Mark Travers - on loan from AFC Bournemouth - made a howler of a clearance, with Otis Khan able to fire the ball past the embarrassed keeper for a 1-1 scoreline.
The expected change of the starting eleven at half time didn't happen, with the presumption that the first team were being kept on to complete a turnaround before they were withdrawn. That appeared to be the case as just past the hour mark Yeovil took the lead. A corner kick was half cleared and then recycled, and when the ball was put back in from the right flank, Bevis Mugabi was present with a low header at the back post from close range to put the Glovers 2-1 up.
Then came the mass substitutions - first the front three got replaced, and then four minutes later all other players were taken off, leaving nine trialists on the pitch, all officially unnamed. Weymouth's line-up contained more familiar names with Brooks and Goodship added to by Josh Wakefield and former youth teamers Sam Lanahan, Tiago Sa and Jayden Corbridge in their line-up. Yeovil's line-up significantly included Omar Sowunmi playing as a centre-back - the first time he has been used in such as position since Paul Sturrock was manager. The mix of trialists, Sowunmi and Olomola were good enough to comfortably hold on for the win.
