Officials for the League Two match between Yeovil Town and Accrington Stanley have been published by the Football League. The match takes place on Saturday 18th March 2017 at Huish Park, with a 3.00p.m. kick-off. The man in charge of the fixture will be referee Nigel Miller (County Durham).
We've only had Mr Miller once in the last eight years, and twice in nearly ten years. Whilst part of that will have come down to where the match official lives, part of it appeared to relate to complaints made by former manager Russell Slade made when he tried to get the Football League to remove him from the list of officials prior to the club's Play-Off Semi-Final First Leg match against Nottingham Forest back in May 2007. Russell's view was that the official had a vendetta against him, and either by coincidence or to keep the peace, Mr Miller's involvement in Yeovil Town matches rapidly dried up.
The match in question did not help his relationship with Slade, with Forest being awarded two penalties in a 0-2 defeat, with the first in particular causing the home crowd to vent their fury repeatedly at Mr Miller - more so when he refused to award the Glovers a nailed-on penalty during the second period. Thankfully for the second leg, Mr Miller had been removed from the list of officials and things didn't turn out so bad at the City Ground.
Other than that match, Mr Miller has been seen at a 1-1 draw against Blackpool in October 2006 and a 2-1 defeat at Rochdale on a Friday night in October 2004. Neither match saw him particularly cover himself in glory. The most recent meeting involving him was the October 2009 match against Oldham Athletic. It ended in a 0-0 draw, with Yeovil having a goal ruled out by Miller for an apparent handball by 'scorer' Craig Davies. We weren't too convinced about that decision on the night - especially as Davies was given a yellow card for it - but in fairness the BBC and then manager Terry Skiverton didn't make an issue of the decision.
The most recent outing involving Mr Miller came in Februry 2016 - perhaps the League felt enough time had passed following the Play-Off Semi-Final for him to turn up at a Yeovil game. Overall he had a fairly quiet game, although we weren't too impressed with his decision to ultimately play nine minutes of second half injury time. There had been a lengthy stoppage for an injury to Artur Krysiak, that saw Chris Weale end up between the sticks, but even the signalled seven minutes injury time seemed excessive, and by the time he played nine minutes worth, we wondered what he was doing, particularly as Luton were building up a lot of late pressure. Thankfully we held on for a 1-1 draw.
Mr Miller will be assisted by Andrew Quin (Devon) and Justin Amey (Dorset). The Fourth Official will be Adam Bromley (Devon).
