Yeovil Town youth teamer Gavin McCallum has been given a professional contract with the club. The Canadian has been with the club for just over a year now, and tends to play as a left winger, although has also been used as a striker and as a right winger. He was born on August 24th, 1987 in Mississauga, Canada.
Gavin made his debut for the club as a Youth Team player on October 2nd 2004 against Portsmouth. His first game for the Reserve team came a month later when he played against Weymouth on November 10th 2004, scoring after coming on as a substitute. His full Reserve debut came a week later in a Somerset Premier Cup win over Bristol Manor Farm.
Overall Gavin has made 20 reserve team appearances, scoring three goals, whilst at Youth Team level he has made 29 appearances, scoring nine goals. Probably his finest moment so far was a hat-trick he scored against Bournemouth earlier this month in the Football League Youth Alliance.
Gavin has also grabbed international honours with Canada’s U18 National Team. He scored for the national side on October 29th 2005 with the only goal of the game against an Everton U18s side, having played in all of the three previous tour games against Liverpool, Huddersfield Town and Manchester United U18 sides. He has also been called up to the Canadian U20s squad this season despite his age still making him eligible for the U18s. Gavin comes from a family with a strong footballing pedigree - his uncle, Trevor McCallum, played 18 times for Canada from 1983-1988.
