23 August 2014 : Yeovil 1 Scunthorpe 1 : Moore And Madden Keep It Level
Yeovil Town and Scunthorpe United shared the spoils this afternoon at Huish Park, as a goal from a current striker and a former striker kept the scores level. In a match where the Glovers had plenty of early chances without breaking the deadlock, it was substitute Kieffer Moore who found the back of the net 65 minutes into the match, as he converted a Sam Foley cross from inside the box. But Paddy Madden was on hand to spoil the party eight minutes from the end as he scored a goal typical of his time in Somerset, as he made himself room to fire home, and keep the Glovers in 19th place in the early League One table.

Unsurprisingly given the midweek performance and result at Walsall on Tuesday night, team selection for manager Gary Johnson was an easy one - the same starting eleven and the same six substitutes, with the likes of James Berrett, Joel Grant, Liam Davis and Seth Nana Twumasi all unavailable and Matteo Lanzoni not currently being selected.

There was a typical home-vs-away first half balance in the game, with Yeovil Town having the majority of the possession and the territory, whilst Scunthorpe used occasional breakaway attacks to try to get their incisive play. Kevin Dawson and AJ Leitch-Smith were both denied in a double-save from Scunthorpe goalkeeper Robert Olejnik, whilst Leitch-Smith really should have scored when he burst clean through only to find the goalkeeper saving with his legs. At the other end Jennison Myrie-Williams provided the main attacking menace, with one run in from the wings forcing Chris Weale to palm the ball around his post.

The first period had ended with a slightly inert looking final 10 or 15 minute period in which Scunthorpe had managed to snuff out the Yeovil attacks and that pattern continued after the break. The Iron forced Chris Weale into a double save as he denied Lyle Taylor and then Paddy Madden, and the danger was that the visitors would grab a sucker punch from such a situation.

However, with 25 minutes remaining, Kieffer Moore entered the pitch as a replacement for James Hayter - two minutes later Yeovil were ahead. His chest down into the path of Sam Foley allowed an attack to be built up, and as the winger pushed the ball to the byline, the cross into the box met Moore who timed his run well to score his first goal of the 2014-15 season and to put the Glovers 1-0 up.

AJ Leitch-Smith headed over a Kevin Dawson cross, and the striker was involved in an unusual spot of perfect refereeing consistency from referee Keith Hill, who produced a yellow for a Leitch-Smith dive and then followed it up by doing the same to Scunthorpe substitute Billy Kee. But with eight minutes to go, the inevitable happened. Scunthorpe substitute Gary McSheffrey threaded a ball through to Paddy Madden, and his skill once he got inside the box avoided any Yeovil defenders closing him down, and he shot home at the near post to equalise against his old side. To his credit, he chose not to celebrate his second goal of the season, despite the obvious temptation to do so.

That was pretty much that, with the game fizzling out - helped by Scunthorpe being more than happy to wind down the clock at this stage, and referee Keith Hill not being too bothered about the situation, save to add on four additional minutes. A Kieffer Moore run and shot was about the only other incident, but a home draw was what they had to settle for, which keeps the Glovers in 19th place, although with it being such an early league table, they are just one win off the play-off positions. Very early days yet.
