Yeovil Town stuck nine goals past Southern League Premier Division side Dorchester Town tonight, as they completed their pre-season friendly with a thrashing. The high scoring match came despite the Glovers selecting a group of players who are more likely to be warming the bench than starting Saturday's League One opener against Doncaster Rovers, although some will have done themselves no harm in getting themselves noticed. Hat-tricks for front pairing James Hayter and Sam Hoskins were accompanied by goals from Seth Nana Twumasi, Matteo Lanzoni and Sam Foley, with the Magpies suffering their second crushing defeat in pre-season, having already lost 11-0 at the Avenue Stadium last month.
Yeovil's opener came 19 minutes into the match, and not long after James Berrett had seen a shot hit the woodwork after it had come off a Dorchester defender. Three minutes after that they launched a counterattack that saw Chris Weale clear the ball up field, with Berrett grabbing possession. Dorchester couldn't clear their lines when he put the ball into the danger area, and Seth Nana Twumasi lashed home from outside the box for a 1-0 lead.
In the lead-up to the break, two quick goals put the Glovers into a very comfortable position after fouls by the Dorchester defence. James Berrett's free kick into the box saw Dorchester keeper Alan Walker-Harris over-commit himself, and Matteo Lanzoni was well placed to head home for the second of the night. Two goals then became three, after Sam Hoskins was fouled inside the box. Manager Gary Johnson has made it clear that if James Hayter is on the pitch then he will be the club's penalty taker this season and he ratified that view by sending Walker-Harris the wrong way for a 3-0 half time lead.
The second half saw no let-up from the Glovers as they upped the tempo after the break. Six minutes in, Sam Hoskins released James Hayter who got in behind the Dorchester defence to slot home in a one-on-one with the home keeper. Three minutes later and Hayter turned provider as he fed Sam Hoskins for the fifth of the night. Then James Hayter took advantage of a sloppy defensive error in the Magpies defence to pounce for his hat-trick on the hour mark.
Hayter's strike partner Sam Hoskins then upped his game as he finished from close range following a Nathan Ralph run down the flank and a cross into the far post. In the last ten minutes, Sam Hoskins became the second Yeovil player to get a hat-trick, as James Hayter became the provider once again, and the former Southampton academy player finished from inside the box. There was enough time for substitute Sam Foley to convert Nathan Smith's cross at the back post for the ninth and final goal of the evening, and to complete the 2014-15 pre-season schedule in style.
