The Yeovil Town Ladies first team are undoubtedly playing in the biggest season of their history, having recently joined the newly formed FA Women's Super League Division 2. Their FA WSL Season opener was at the home of Reading FC, the Madejski Stadium, where they faced a top quality Reading Women side. The Glovers were unfortunately defeated 3-0, but this didnít have any negative impact on their confidence.
They kicked-off their first ever FA WSL home fixture at the Jones Stadium, Sherborne Town FC, Dorset on Sunday 20th April. Initially, the day did not bode well in terms of weather, with pouring rain throughout the day. However, as soon as the game got underway, the weather was no problem for the Glovers as they shot to success Ė four times.
Goals came from striker Katie Cook, and a hat-trick from midfielder Stacey Pearson. What's more, the club got the highest level of attendance throughout the WSL 2 for that day; 281 fans did not let the dreadful conditions put them off! Commenting David Mills said:
"I would like to thank the fans for their amazing support - it was the worst weather I have ever seen at a game, yet they not only came to see the game but stayed throughout. I think the fact that our gate was higher than that for games at Doncaster, Sunderland and Watford underlines how great our support was."
Mills went on to praise the players and off the field staff at the game too, in what was a landmark fixture for the club, adding:
"The players and off the field staff of both clubs were also great and our volunteers were superb. Unfortunately we had to cancel some of the entertainment we had planned due to the dreadful weather, but everyone in both clubs made sure the fans got to see what was a great game."
The Glovers are next in action on Sunday 27th April (tomorrow) in an away against Oxford United Women tomorrow - Sunday 27th April. They then face a very busy May which includes two back-to-back home games against FA WSL 1 side Birmingham City Ladies in the Continental Cup and then against a strong Aston Villa side in the league. The Birmingham City game is next Thursday, 1st May, with a 7.00p.m. kick-off. To find out more and get tickets, head to their Ticketing Page.
